CONSTITUTION: Sewage introduced through a stock water inlet pipe 10 into an inflow chamber 8 of a denitrification tower 5 is denitrified by anaerobic bacteria sustained on string-shaped contactor s 20 in the inflow chamber 8 and an outflow chamber 9, and fed through the lower bottom of a circulation measure 11 into the lower portion of a catalytic oxidation tower 1 by a circulation pump 17 together with air sucked by an air-sucking ejector 14. The liquid rising through the tower 1 is subjected to removal of organic substances and nitrification by aerobic bacteria sustained on a plurality of string-shaped contactors 20 in the tower 1. The nitrified liquid is introduced again from an upper overflow weir 2 into the inflow chamber 8 of the tower 5, where BOD components in the stock sewage act as a hydrogen supplier to facilitate denitrification smoothly. Thus, a part (corresponding to the amount of the charged stock sewage) of the liquid from which BOD components and nitrogen were removed during the cycle through the towers 1, 5, is discharged through a disposed water-draining pipe 3 of the tower 1.
