CONSTITUTION: Iron oxide of lower order on the surface of a metal member such as a tubular member 1 made of cast iron is dissolved and a solidified dense potash glass layer is formed. The member is a structural member of the exhaust system of an engine. The surface of the member is cleaned with an alkaline soln., dipped in a potassium silicate soln., dried, oxidized with steam and calcined in a nitrogen atmosphere. A coated member having a significant oxidation preventing effect and fine black appearance can be provided.
