CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of o-methallyloxyphenol by the reaction of catechol with methallyl chloride, the reaction is carried out by using 1W10pts.wt. of a ketone as the reaction solvent based on 1pt.wt. of the catechol, and using a dehydrochlorinating agent comprising one or more bases selected from alkali metal carbonates (e.g. K
2 CO
3 ), alkali metal bicarbonates (e.g. KHCO
3 ) and amines having a pKa of ≥10 (e.g. ethylamine) or the base and KI and/or NaI as the catalyst. The amounts of the alkali metal carbonate, bicarbonate, amine, and catalyst are 0.3W1mol, 0.6W3mol, 0.3W3mol, and 0W1mol per 1mol of catechol, respectively.
