An apparatus and method are provided for a sofa seat cushion comprising a cushion core including a multiplicity of pocketed springs enclosed within an upholstery foam envelope. The pocketed springs are positioned side by side in a spring layer arrangement and are independently operable. A memory foam layer positioned above the upholstery foam envelope comprises a material capable of molding to a person's body sitting on the sofa seat cushion and then quickly returning to an original shape once the person leaves the sofa seat cushion. The memory foam layer comprises a gel-infused visco-elastic memory foam with a polyethylene terephthalate layer positioned there above. Directly below the upholstery foam envelope is an upholstery-grade polyurethane foam layer with a polyethylene terephthalate layer positioned directly thereunder. An exterior upholstery surrounding the cushion core provides a plush seating surface. |

A bed is provided that includes a foundation configured to be positioned on an underlying floor and a mattress assembly supported on and secured to the foundation. The mattress assembly includes a base layer and a body supporting portion. One or more internal plates are interposed between the base layer and the body supporting portion of the mattress assembly and are maintained at a fixed height relative to the underlying floor. The foundation and the mattress assembly are moveable between at least a first predetermined height and a second predetermined height relative to the underlying floor. As a result of the movement of the foundation and the mattress assembly between the first predetermined. height and the second predetermined height, the one or more internal plates apply pressure to and compress the body supporting portion of the mattress assembly, thus increasing the firmness of the body supporting portion. |

A pillow core (1) is made from a foamed plastics material which is softly resilient, and has its upper thickness formed with upright parallel ribs (5) spaced from one another by slots of elongated cross-section. The ribs have their upper surfaces attached to the underside of a porous web (3) which is soft and flexible but relatively inextensible in its own plane. The lower thickness of the core (1) is formed with cylindrical sockets (11) containing removable plugs (14) of foamed plastics material removable from their sockets through respective slits (12) formed in the underside of the core. The upper thickness of the core gives the pillow surface a soft plush feel, and the plugs are selectively removable to alter the resistance to compression of the pillow. |

A mattress has a layer of generally straight levers embedded therein in at least one layer. As a heavy portion of the body pushes down on one end of levers, the opposite end pushes up to support an adjacent portion of the body. The levers may be spring material to render the reaction less severe. The ends of the levers are preferably connected together in groups by flexible strands. The strands maintain the organization within a layer, but allow movement in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the sleeping surface of the mattress. More than one layer of levers can be used when desired. |
