201 | Reinforcement of ceramic bodies with wollastonite | US848305 | 1997-04-30 | US6037288A | 2000-03-14 | Sara M. Robinson; Donald B. Craig |
The use of wollastonite fibers having relatively long average fiber lengths as reinforcement agents for unfired sanitaryware bodies. The addition of refined wollastonite to sanitaryware bodies exhibited improved resistance to propagation of cracks, reduced drying and firing shrinkage, fluxing activity, an HF release inhibition upon firing. Reduced shrinkage and increased permeability improves the resistance to cracking during rapid drying and allows faster time schedules to be employed.
202 | Mullite-containing coatings for inorganic fibers and ceramic matrix composites | US981111 | 1997-12-17 | US6022621A | 2000-02-08 | Eugene Michael McCarron, III; Mark Andrew Harmer; Sujata Jagota |
A ceramic matrix composite article comprised of inorganic fibers having a mullite-containing coating disposed within a matrix phase. The invention also provides a method for mating such an article, as well as for preparing a fiber having a mullite-containing coating. The mullite-containing coating on inorganic fibers within a matrix acts as a debonding coating, and the ceramic matrix composite article exhibits high strength and fracture toughness, even at elevated temperatures.

Methods are provided for treating liquid hazardous waste containing anionic radioactive or heavy metal materials by binding the hazardous waste to hydroxyapatite powder, drying and then cold or hot pressing the hydroxyapatite powder into a solid mass for storage or disposal. The methods are useful for treatment and storage of radioactive waste, anions, and heavy metals. Methods are also provided for treating high concentration liquid hazardous waste and liquid hazardous waste which does not contain materials known to decompose at high temperatures.

The present invention provides a large-scale thin board of sintered body (ceramic tile) with low water absorption and high frost-resistance. The manufacturing method comprises the steps of preparing the ingredients talc, vitrifying components such as feldspar and porcelain stone, low wollastonite which is a needle crystal mineral, and plastic clay as main components, then mixing fine particles of those materials, compacting into a thin board with the needle crystals oriented uniformly in one preferred direction, and burning at a temperature lower than that of crystal inversion of low wollastonite, in order to manufacture a highly frost-resistant large-scale thin ceramic board with a water absorption of 3% or less in an excellent product condition. It is further preferable to utilize low wollastonite which has undergone grading of grains by mixing short-fibre type and long-fibre type. |
