Method and material for wrapping items using a wrapping material made up of separate wrapping portions of a predetermined length. The wrapping portions are attached and released at their ends using a Z-lock system including a discrete laminate. The discrete laminate of the Z-lock system holds the wrapping portions together during manufacturing but can also easily release or separate the wrapping portions at a desired point in the wrapping process. The separating of the wrapping portions exposes an adhesive that is use to securely bond at least one wrapping portion to the item being wrapped at the end of a wrapping cycle.

45 Method for manufacturing tape tab fasteners US450773 1995-05-24 US5578152A 1996-11-26 David J. K. Goulait; David W. Cabell
A method for the manufacture of tape tab stock that may be used to produce tape tabs for use with disposable absorbent articles, as well as a method for the on-line manufacture of tape tabs that may be manufactured concurrently with the chassis of the absorbent article to which the tape tabs will be attached. The first step is to provide a backing substrate upon which the adhesives of the tape tab can be applied. Once the backing is provided, a pressure-sensitive adhesive is applied to regions of one side of the backing substrate. (The pressure-sensitive adhesive preferably functions as the adhesive used to fasten an element of the absorbent article, such as a front waist region, to another element of the absorbent article, such as a rear waist region.) The backing substrate is then slit in a direction parallel to the machine direction and the release surface of a release substrate is placed in contact with the pressure-sensitive adhesive, forming a laminate comprising the backing substrate and the release substrate. The release substrate preferably covers the entire surface of the backing substrate upon which pressure-sensitive adhesive has been applied. However, in a preferred embodiment, at least a portion of the backing substrate extends outwardly in a direction parallel to the cross machine direction beyond the longitudinal edges of the release substrate. The surface of the laminate, including the surface of the release substrate that is not in contact with the pressure-sensitive adhesive, and any of the backing substrate not covered by the release substrate is then coated with a construction adhesive. (The construction adhesive is used to join the tape tabs to the absorbent article.) After the construction adhesive is applied to the surface of the laminate, the laminate is slit in a direction parallel to the machine direction and either rewound for shipping or storage, or fed to a taper unit that is integrated into the absorbent article manufacturing line. The taper unit cuts individual tape tabs and applies them to the absorbent article chassis.

47 Method for manufacturing one-piece tape tabs for use with disposable absorbent articles US263322 1994-06-21 US5482588A 1996-01-09 David J. K. Goulait; David W. Cabell; Michael T. Huber; Karl P. Ronn
A method for the manufacture of one-piece tape tabs to be used with disposable absorbent articles. The first step is to provide a backing substrate upon which the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the tape tab can be applied. Once the backing is provided, the pressure-sensitive adhesive is applied to regions of one side of the backing substrate. The backing substrate is then slit in a direction parallel to the machine direction forming tape tab stock that is preferably fed directly to the taper unit of the absorbent article manufacturing line. The taper unit cuts the tape tab stock comprising the pressure-sensitive adhesive into individual tape tabs, each having a fixed end and releasable end. The fixed end of each tape tab is joined to the chassis of an absorbent article by means of mechanically bonding the fixed end to the absorbent article. The mechanical bonding not only joins the fixed end of the tape tab to the absorbent article, but also forms a region on the outwardly facing surface of the fixed end of the tape tab that acts as a release surface for the pressure-sensitive adhesive. In preferred embodiments, an area of the absorbent article adjacent to the fixed end of the tape tab is also subjected to mechanical bonding. The mechanical bonding forms a region on the surface of the absorbent article that acts a release surface for the pressure-sensitive adhesive disposed on the releasable end of each tape tab.

A method for the manufacture of one-piece tape tabs (40) to be used with disposable absorbent articles (20). The first step is to provide a backing substrate upon which the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the tape tab (40) can be applied. Once the backing is provided, the pressure-sensitive adhesive is applied to regions of one side to the backing substrate. The backing substrate is then slit in a direction parallel to the machine direction forming tape tab stock that is preferably fed directly to the taper unit of the absorbent article manufacturing line. The taper unit cuts the tape tab stock comprising the pressure-sensitive adhesive into individual tape tabs (40), each having a fixed end and releasable end. The fixed end of each tape (40) is joined to the chassis of an absorbent article (20) by means of mechanically bonding the fixed end to the absorbent article (20). The mechanical bonding not only joins the fixed end of the tape tab (40) to the absorbent article (20), but also forms a region on the outwardly facing surface of the fixed end of the tape tab (40) that acts as a release surface for the pressure-sensitive adhesive. In preferred embodiments, an area of the absorbent article (20) adjacent to the fixed end of the tape tab (40) is also subjected to mechanical bonding. The mechanical bonding forms a region on the surface of the absorbent article (20) that acts a release surface for the pressure-sensitive adhesive disposed on the releasable end of each tape tab (40).

57 Method of manufacturing a tape tab having a rounded user's end EP94101673.5 1994-02-04 EP0667135A1 1995-08-16 Fenske, (NMN) Wilfried; Schmitz,(NMN) Christoph

The invention relates to a method of manufacturing tape tabs for use in an absorbent article and to tape tabs made by said method. The method comprises providing a number of curved cuts (56) in a unitary strip of material (52) to form side extensions followed by creasing and folding over of the side extensions. After folding over of the side extensions, the unitary strip of material is cut along transverse cut lines (83) to form individual tape tabs (88). Alternatively, composite tape tabs are formed comprising a release member, by combining the unitary strip of material with a release strip prior to cutting the individual tapes.

In one embodiment, the material that is cut from the rounded corner of one tape tab forms the side extension (57) of the neighbouring tape tab, which side extension is doubled over to form a reinforced gripping part.

In another embodiment, cut-out sections are formed that are contiguous with the rounded corners of each time two neighbouring tape tabs. The cut-out sections are doubled over.

The advantage of the method according to the invention is that no scrap is formed, that a reinforced gripping part is formed which easily detaches from a release surface and that a baby-friendly rounded corner is provided.

58 A method for manufacturing fastening tape and fastening tape manufactured in accordance with the method EP89850431.1 1989-12-11 EP0379850A1 1990-08-01 Aronsson, Anders; Johansson, Dan; Olsson, Lennart

The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing adhesive tapes (1, 2) from an elongated material web (3) which is coated with an adhesive (6, 8) at least along the side margins thereof, and which has a non-adhesive, straight band (7) extending centrally in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the web. In accordance with the invention the web (3) is divided longitudinally by means of two wave-shaped line-cuts (10,11; 10′,11,′) which are positioned so that the line-cuts will not intersect one another within the region of the non-adhesive band (7), such that the wave crests of a first line-cut (11; 11′) and the troughs of a second line-cut (10; 10′) lie within the confines of the non-adhesive band, whereas the wave troughs of the first line-cut (11; 11′) and the wave crests of the second line-cut (10; 10′) lie externally of the non-adhesive region. The web is also divided transversely by means of line-cuts (12; 12′) which extend transversely to the long axis of the web, from the centre of the crests and troughs of the two longitudinally extending line-cuts (10,11; 10′, 11′), which lie externally of the non- adhesive band, to the side edges of the elongated web.

The invention also relates to a fastening tape (1,2) manufactured in accordance with the method.
