21 Apparatus and method for applying a twist-tie to a packaging container US277359 1994-07-19 US5389190A 1995-02-14 Brian D. Larsen; James A. Beckman; Stan W. Drietz; Scott L. Nelson; Mike P. Feltman; Gary L. Lowe
An apparatus for applying a twist-tie to a multiple serving, recloseable, flexible packaging container including a payout mechanism for holding a supply of twist-tie material. An extracting and cutting mechanism is configured to extract a continuous length of twist-tie material from the supply of twist-tie material and cut a twist-tie of a desired length. A magnetic application mechanism produces a magnetic force sufficient to remove the twist-tie (at least a portion of which is metallic) from the extracting and cutting mechanism. A dispensing mechanism dispenses a hot melt adhesive material on the twist-tie held by the magnetic application mechanism. The magnetic application mechanism then applies the twist-tie to a surface of a container. The adhesive material acts to secure the twist-tie to the container.
22 Process for producing paper bags with handles US152172 1993-11-16 US5382215A 1995-01-17 Gunter Mattiebe
A process for producing paper bags with handles glued to the insides of the facing opening edges, includes perforating a paper web with transverse perforation lines spaced at distances corresponding to the section lengths necessary to produce the bags. At a given distance from the transverse perforation lines the handles are glued in adjacent pairs to the web in such a way that the outer handle parts project beyond the transverse perforation lines. The web is joined together into a tubular web by folding over its side edges, such that the handles face each other. The overlapping side edges that have been folded together are glued to form a seam. The sections are detached along the transverse perforation lines and each section is provided with a bottom portion at the end opposite the handles. Adhesive coatings are applied to the web in a transverse direction between arms of the handle and Z-shaped folds are made in the adhesive area and folded onto the adhesive, using pressure, to prevent the upper edge of the bag from tearing.

27 Method of manufacturing packing and strip material therefor US299470 1989-01-18 US4969967A 1990-11-13 Leif B. Sorensen; Soren H. Sorensen
A packing comprising first and second opposed surfaces in a closure area of the packing has profiled portions secured to and extending over each of the opposed surfaces, which profiled portions are adapted to be releasably interengaged to permit connection and disconnection of the opposed surfaces. The profiled portions are each formed integrally with an outer layer of a strip material secured to the associated one of the opposed surfaces. The outer layer of the strip material is formed of a material well suited for forming a peel seal weld with the other opposed surface of the packing, such as a portion of the outer layer of the opposing strip material. The outer layer of each strip material is secured to the one of the first and second opposed surfaces via a base layer of the strip material to which the outer layer is secured by means of a non-peel seal type connection. As a result, the sheet material of the packing, a bag for example, need not be formed of a peel seal weldable material.

A tension control roll is coupled to moving the strap and controls the strap feed to hold a constant tape tension. A folding board includes spaced edge channels in a V-shape for folding the flat web. An air layer is interposed between the web and the folding channels to provide a low friction movement. A bag making machine includes a presealer to form tape edge seals, a cooler for cooling the tape hems and an edge sealer and cutting unit to form the side edges of the bag.
30 Method and apparatus for manufacturing plastic film bag with special flap arrangement US163288 1988-03-01 US4881932A 1989-11-21 Eli Blatt
Apparatus and methods are provided for manufacturing plastic film bags with two-piece flaps. A slitting tool slits the flap portion of a longitudinally displaced film strip arrangement and a spacing tool displaces one of the resulting sections to form a gap. Thereafter, an adhesive hearing tape is applied to bridge the gap and connect the separated sections. After this, a cutting tool cuts notches into the two-piece flap portion which is lifted for this purpose by a Teflon-coated template having a slot to receive the cutting tool. The template has a channel system to enable blowing away the cut out portion. The separate bags are formed by sealing and severing at a position to intersect the notches. The method of the invention involves cutting the notches into the flap section to delineate separate flaps and associated bags in a time frame which follows the folding of the flap section over the main body of the bag. Also the method of the invention comprises loading the goods into the bag through an open end with the mouth of the bag being closed by the associated flap. Thereafter, when access to the goods is desired, the flap may be opened to open the associated mouth, the previously open end which is loading the bag having been closed by heat sealing to some other suitable technique.

33 Apparatus for making plastic carrier bags US656999 1984-10-02 US4605392A 1986-08-12 Fritz Achelpohl; Friedhelm Mundus; Wilfried Ebmeyer
In an apparatus for making plastics carrier bags from a web of tubular film of thermoplastic material, a feeding mechanism intermittently conveys the webs by one bag width and a severing mechanism cuts the web into half tubes along an undulating curve. A carriage displaceable in the machine frame transversely to the feeding direction of the web is reciprocated by a drive derived from a first rotating control cam through gearing. A cutting knife pivotable in the carriage about its longitudinal axis passes through the plane of the tube about an axis perpendicular thereto and is so controlled by an oscillating drive derived from a second rotating control cam that its edge is substantially tangential to the undulating curve at the cutting point. A detour assembly retards one of the half tubes to bring the bag side edge zones into phase and each half tube is formed into bags by a transverse sever-sealing device.

36 Apparatus for sealing a lamina onto a plastic bag US251964 1981-04-07 US4398990A 1983-08-16 Heinz Kuhni; Peter Schwaninger
Aluminum laminae are heat-sealed onto the inside of flat-bottomed plastic bags so that, by bending the lamina double after the bag has been cut open to remove part of its contents, the bag can be reclosed. The apparatus for sealing the laminae on can be incorporated in an existing bag-filling installation. An aluminum strip is supplied to a punching device from a supply roll. A punched-out aluminum lamina is placed upon the upper part of a conveyor lever. The lever is rotated through 180.degree. so that the aluminum lamina to be sealed on comes to be positioned between two layers of a web of plastic material fed by rollers. The ends of the lever are preheated by heating elements in order to accelerate the sealing-on operation. The aluminum lamina is heat-sealed onto the inside of the folded web in such a way that the longer edges of the lamina form an angle of about 45.degree. with the flat bottom of the bag. The rate of production of the existing filling installation can be maintained despite incorporation of the sealing-on apparatus.
37 Rotary bag sealing and perforating machine US174164 1980-07-31 US4333790A 1982-06-08 Helmut T. Schaffron
A web of flattened, tubular, heat-sealable bag material travels above and at the speed of a moving belt. Above the belt is a seal shaft which rotates a heated seal bar. The working edge of the seal bar may be adjusted inward and outward relative to its shaft. The edge causes a transverse seal to be made on the web at intervals. A rotary perforating knife is driven at the same speed as the seal shaft and, at a subsequent station, perforates the web proximate the seal. The linear speed of the edge of the seal bar is at the speed of the belt at the time of sealing contact (about 65.degree.). The speed of the seal shaft for the remaining 295.degree. is adjustable and thereby the distance between seals and perforations is adjustable.

Several embodiments of the method are disclosed. Apparatus for practicing the method is disclosed.
40 Plastic bag machine US598775 1975-07-24 US4011978A 1977-03-15 Hans Lehmacher; Heinz-Eugen Kluppel; Karl Dreckmann
High production rates and decreased wear and tear and stress on parts are obtained in a bag fabrication machine with the web fed intermittently by respective bag lengths, for operations such as perforating, transverse severing or welding with the web halted.A sector plate is oscillated between two extreme positions faster in one direction than in the other by a flywheel-carried crank pin orbiting about an axis eccentric from the plate axis; the pin engaging a block sliding in the plate radially of its axis. The plate motion is applied as input to an electrically operated clutch and brake unit and the output is applied to web advance rolls. Switches on the slide block, actuated at the extreme sector positions, control the alternating clutch and brake engagement to drive the rolls for web feed during the slower sector motion of relatively longer duration; and also declutching with braking to halt the web precisely, for and during a faster sector plate return motion. Web feed length, hence bag length, is selected by adjustment of the crank pin orbit radius.
