<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wood member manufacturing method for stabilizing a shape after simple machining and uniforming a tone. <P>SOLUTION: A raw wood material piece 24 is chamfered at its angular portions with its radially almost equal thickness. The outer periphery of the raw wood material piece 24 is compressed and deformed in the direction of an axial center portion 25 to form an arcuate face. By using the raw wood material piece 24 chamfered with the radially almost equal thickness, a compressed area is reduced to restrict a different in compression rate between portions, therefore stabilizing the shape after machining and uniforming the tone. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI

A method of producing wooden steering wheels with a quality material covering, wherein a semifinished part (10) is formed from an agglomerate of wood fibers, and is defined by a body (2) in the shape of at least a curved ring portion corresponding to the shape of the steering wheel being produced and having a longitudinal projection (7) having a concave work surface (9); the part (10) is used as a bottom die to apply a covering (13) of quality material, e.g. brier, kevlar or aluminium; for which purpose, the covering (13) is applied to the work surface (9) of the part (10), between the part (10) acting as a bottom die and a corresponding top die (14); a corresponding curved half-shell (17) is then machined from the part (10) and applied to a core portion (19) of the steering wheel being produced.

The invention concerns a method of producing wooden segments for motor vehicle steering wheels, a plurality of layers of wood veneer being bonded to form segments in a heated steel mould having the predetermined radii of the steering wheel. These segments are then profiled and bonded onto the pre-expanded core profile of the steering wheel. Variants of the invention produce segments with a root grain veneer and segments with differently coloured veneer layers.
