181 Wrench assisting tool and method US275766 1994-07-15 US5528964A 1996-06-25 Jonathan R. Smith, Jr.
A torque multiplying assist tool engages and pivots about a fulcrum to assist a conventional wrench in operating upon a work-piece. The assist tool functions as a secondary lever by receiving an applied force, pivoting about the fulcrum, and exerting a multiplied force upon the wrench. The wrench includes a grip element that is engaged to the work-piece and a handle extending from the grip element. The multiplied force is applied by way of a linkage assembly to the handle of the wrench causing the wrench to pivot such that torque is applied to the work-piece. In accordance with the preferred embodiments of the present invention, the assist tool is constructed and arranged to cooperate with the wrench to aid in the removal of a lug nut from a vehicle wheel. The work-piece is a lug nut (i.e., a primary lug nut) on the wheel and the fulcrum is another lug nut (i.e., a secondary lug nut) on the same wheel. The assist tool includes a pivot assembly for engaging and pivoting relative to the secondary lug nut and a handle extending from the pivot assembly. In accordance with the first preferred embodiment of the present invention, the linkage assembly extends between the handle of the assist tool and the handle of the wrench, and the wrench is a conventional ratchet wrench. In accordance with the second preferred embodiment of the present invention, the linkage assembly extends between the pivot assembly of the assist tool and the handle of the wrench, and the wrench is a conventional lug wrench. In alternate embodiments an assist tool and wrench are joined so that they remain assembled to one another and generally properly oriented with respect to each other for convenient deployment as a single unit. An improved lug wrench is provided in another alternate embodiment.
182 Utility shutoff key US235981 1994-05-02 US5456278A 1995-10-10 Jeffrey B. Morris; Michael K. Williams
This invention is a dual shutoff key which is a single tool for shutting off both gas and water utilities. This capability is important in emergencies, such as approaching hurricanes or after an earthquake. The key consists of a main bar having a U-channel at one end for main water valve shutoff, and a skew slot for main gas valve shutoff. Hinged to the main bar is a lever bar which can swing out at right angles to the main bar to provide leverage when turning a normally tight or even corroded water valve. The main bar is long enough to reach down to below-ground water valves, and the lever bar is long enough to provide a torque of 150 foot-pounds. This enables persons with limited manual strength--such as children, the handicapped and the elderly--to shut off water. For gas shutoff the main bar provides sufficient leverage and the lever bar is placed in the folded position adjacent to the main bar. The lever bar is held in place by detents in the folded position. For storage, the folded key can be suspended from the gas slot. A self-luminous band on the outside of the folded lever bar helps retrieval of the key from storage during dark when an emergency has knocked out electric lights. Steel construction makes for a sturdy shutoff key which can take the design torque without deformation. All surfaces of the shutoff key are made inert by a vinyl coating which eliminates potentially dangerous releases of surface vapors and arcing.

A direction-changeable structure of the hand tool handles comprises mainly a body, a coupling tube, and a sleeve. The hand tools of different functions, such as screw driver, thread tapper, socket wrench, etc., can be fixed on the front of the body by a chuck, chucking blocks and a clip to function differently. The body is fixed inside a coupling tube by an arc key which is placed in a key way forming in the inside of the coupling tube. Having a direction selective mechanism attached to it, the main function of the coupling tube is to transmit torque and to select torque transmission direction. The coupling tube can insert into a sleeve which can receive every parts constituting the device according to this invention and fix them together. A handle bar can pass the holes forming in the coupling and sleeve to transmit large torque if necessary.
