The invention relates to a device in a machine for trimming vegetables, especially Brussels sprouts, by means of a rotary cutter forming the bottom of a trapezoidal groove (3), which is formed by the inclined sides (2) of a pair of rotary flanges, the vegetables being caused by the action of the rotary flanges and stationary holding means (5-12) to perform a rotary movement around themselves at the same time as they follow the rotary flanges in the groove (3) between them, and projecting parts of the vegetables are exposed to the cutter and trimmed off. According to the invention the holding means consists of a number of substantially planar plates (5-12), which are arranged resiliently and elastically pivotable around axes (13-20), which are substantially parallel to the rotary shaft of the cutter and of the flanges, which overlap each other like roof tiles substantially along the groove (3) between the flanges with the free ends of the plates pointing in the direction of rotation, and which form a ceiling of the groove along a part thereof (FIG. 1).

An apparatus for removing brussels sprouts from the parent stalks including a plurality of blades arranged generally in the form of a truncated pyramid and defining an aperture for receiving the sprout bearing stalks, the blades being rotatable to remove brussels sprouts from the stalks, as the stalks are fed into the assembly through the aperture.
12 | Stripping of Brussels sprouts from their stems | US479759 | 1974-06-17 | US3935867A | 1976-02-03 | George Wilfred Richardson |
A method of stripping Brussels sprouts from their stems wherein the sprout plants are fed laterally in succession to the nip between a soft resilient surface of a movable member and a series of laterally spaced pressure members each having a soft resilient surface yieldably urged towards the surface of the movable member, the movable member and the pressure members being adapted to cause rotation of each plant substantially about the axis of its stem as it passes into and through the nip, and the sprouts are removed from the stems by a series of successions of resilient stripping members with the members of each succession being spaced apart in the direction of movement of the plants and adapted to exert resilient stripping pressure on the sprouts as the plants pass rotatably along the nip, the series of stripping members and pressure members alternating in the lateral direction of the nip. An apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed.
13 | Machine for removing edible sprouts from a brussels sprouts stalk | US3552397D | 1968-12-23 | US3552397A | 1971-01-05 | GREENOUGH HARRISON |
A method and apparatus for removing sprouts from a Brussels sprouts stalk including rotating knife means defining a central opening through which the stalk of the plant is fed as the knife means cut off the sprouts. Each knife is spaced from the stalk by a stalk guide cutting through the semihard bark and riding on the hard woody shell of the stalk. The knives are held at an angle to the stalk axis to cut off the sprouts in a plane tangent to the sprouts and perpendicular to the centerline of the pedicel.

The present invention shows an apparatus for trimming plants, specifically assisting with the process of separating leaves and buds from the stem and branches of the plant. The apparatus is composed by an iris mechanism with blades that adapt to the diameter of the stem, and a feeding mechanism that forces the plant trough the iris. The buds and leaves are by these means separated from the stem due to the shear forces imposed by the blades. All of the waste is collected in the back of the apparatus and separated from the buds and leaves that are ready to be further processed to achieve the state needed for their final application.
19 | Devices for removing brussels sprouts from their stalks | US780442 | 1977-03-23 | US4151847A | 1979-05-01 | Jan A. van Donkelaar |
A device for removing attached parts from the stalk of a plant moving downstream along a feed path, and in particular a Brussel sprout plant comprising, an annular member rotatably mounted concentric of the feed path having a central opening through which the plant can pass, a plurality of cutting members pivotally mounted on the annular member in a plane perpendicular to the feed path and a knife portion with a cutting edge connected to each annular member. An electric motor is connected to the annular member for rotating it and causing the cutting members to pivot axially inwardly toward the feed path to cut the Brussel sprouts off the Brussel sprout stalk. The cutting edges of the knife portions are movable in a circular path concentric with the feed path and an opening device is connected to the cutting member for moving the knife portions with the cutting edges radially outwardly and increasing the radius of the circular path taken by the cutting edges. A stalk pulling member is movable from an upstream position between the cutting edges to a downstream position and the pulling member includes a cylindrical outer surface against which the knife portions can bear.
