A multiple fowl carrying apparatus useful in automated fowl processing includes a shackle mounting frame. The mounting frame is connected to a conveyor system that routes it through certain unit operations, which can include washing, chilling and preparation for packaging. The shackle mounting frame carries a plurality of pivotally mounted shackles, movable between a first and a second position. In the first position the shackles can suspend a fowl by its legs in a processing position. When the shackles are pivoted to the second position, the fowl will drop from the shackles, readying them for further processing, packaging or the like. The apparatus includes mechanism for holding the shackles in the first position and for releasing the shackles so they can pivot to the second position. The shackles are counterweighted about the pivotal mounting so that in the absence of a fowl they are biased toward the first position.

A shackle having a rod for extending and supporting an eviscerated bird in a position so that moisture can drip from the bird as the shackle is moved by an overhead conveyor. The shackle has means for pivoting the rod from a generally upright position at which it supports the bird to a downwardly extending position at which the bird can gravitate from the rod. The pivoting means can operate to return the rod to its upright position.

Shackles are transported by an overhead conveyor through a housing. A pair of motor rotated brushes are mounted on opposite sides of the housing along the path of travel of the shackles. The brushes comprise a plurality of flexible fibers extending from a center axis. When at rest, the flexible fibers of the brushes tend to droop downwardly to form a clearance between the brushes so that the shackles may travel unimpeded between the brushes. When the brushes are rotated, the flexible fibers extend outwardly into contact with the shackles for cleaning thereof. Structure is provided to direct fluid upon the brushes and the shackles during operation of the system.

Shackles are transported by an overhead conveyor through a housing. Elongated pipes are disposed on opposite sides of the housing along the path of travel of the shackles, with spray nozzles being positioned along the lengths of the pipes. A source of pressurized fluid is connected to each of the pipes. Each of the pipes are oscillated about a prescribed angle such that oscillating sprays of high pressure fluid are directed against the shackles as they are transported through the housing. Additional sprays are disposed on the bottom of the housing for directing a higher pressure fluid spray upwardly against the shackles. Structure is provided to trip automatic shackles open as they are transported through the housing to facilitate cleaning thereof.
