979,458. Semi-conductor thyratron switching circuits. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Sept. 29, 1961 [Dec. 14, 1960], No. 35394/61. Heading H3T. [Also in Division H2] An arrangement for disconnecting a load 17 from a D.C. supply system 13, 14 comprises a semi-conductor thyratron 16 and a disconnecting relay 15 which is operable only when the thyratron is non-conducting. To switch on the load, a control switch 19 is brought into the position shown to cause the charging of capacitors 21, 25 in striking and quenching circuits 20, 24, and to energize the coil 18 of the relay 15. The relay, with a delay, closes main contacts 7, 9 in the load circuit, and auxiliary contacts 11 to permit the capacitor 21 to provide a striking impulse through a transformer 23 to the thyratron to render it conducting. To switch off the load, the control switch 19 is operated to its other position to open contacts 1, 3 so that the coil 18 remains connected only in parallel with the load 17, and to close contacts 5 so that the capacitor 25 supplies a quenching pulse to the thyratron 16 through a transformer 27. The thyratron ceases to conduct, the coil 18 is de-energized and the relay 15 opens its contacts. The switch 19 may be a relay and have its contacts connected to an independent constant voltage source. The transformers 23 and 27 may be omitted.
