An acceleration switch for sensing certain positive or negative accelerations which exceed a given limit value, in particular for safety devices in motor vehicles, has a housing (1) containing a switch which is actuated and automatically returned to its initial position by an inert mass. The inert mass is designed as an at least partly magnetizable switch pendulum (4) which in the rest position is acted on by the force of attraction of a permanent magnet.
166 | A switch assembly | EP92311484.7 | 1992-12-16 | EP0551745A3 | 1993-10-27 | Green, Terence William |
In the field of tilt switches and shock sensors, it is known to provide a switch comprising a sealed chamber containing two switch terminals and a pool of mercury. On moving of the switch as a result of tilting or the application of an impulse, the mercury moves to close or open a circuit as desired. Such devices have disadvantages arising from the toxity of mercury. The disclosure relates to a switch assembly in which a magnet (26) is mounted for movement in the vicinity of a reed switch (20). A weight (29) is moveable in a direction generally perpendicular to the magnet (26), and is connected thereto by a mechanism (16;38,39,40;44) which translates the movement of the weight to movement of the magnet. The magnet (26) and reed switch (20) are configured so that the reed switch actuates on movement of the magnet. The advantage of the invention is that tilt switches and shock sensors can be constructed without the need for mercury. |

An electric switch 11 has contacts 12 and 13 which are initially closed by activating means 14. The invention provides urging means 22 to bias the switch against reopening of the contacts during at least an initial period which is useful if the activating means does not operate for long enough for the electric switch to assume its stable closed position. The urging means is responsive to current carried through the contacts. It is possible to provide a plurality of switches responsive to the same urging means, different switches being provided for different electrical circuits and possibly energised from different sources. |

s An alarm assembly 10 comprises a housing attached to a back plate 12 to define a cavity occupied by a bell or siren and a tamper detection device. The tamper detection device 14 comprises a member 16 mounted for free movement in the cavity in more than one direction in response to a body entering the cavity or movement of the housing. The member 16 comprises a magnet 22 which is repelled by another magnet 40 so as to be movable between a metastable rest position and a disturbed position. A sensor 42 senses when the member 10 is in the disturbed position and causes the bell or siren to be set off. |

176 | Force responsive switch | EP83304928.1 | 1983-08-25 | EP0103433A2 | 1984-03-21 | Grossar, Francis |
In response to a deceleration force, a rapidly reacting magnetic system causes a switch to change state. A predetermined time after the force ceases, a second, relatively slowly reacting magnetic system causes the switch to return to its original state. In a preferred ambodiment each magnetic system may include a fixed magnet and a magnet movable within a recess. A reed switch situated in a housing proximate the recesses is controlled by the positions of the movable magnets. The recess through which the movable magnet of the slowly reacting system moves contains a fluid. This magnet carries a pair of self-positioning members which cooperate with the fluid to regulate the speed of the movement of the magnet within the recess, in accordance with its direction of movement, such that the slowly reacting system maintains the switch in the changed state and, thereafter, returns the switch to its original state. |

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a switch ensuring a sure and reproducible switching function only by having a deflectable inertial mass responding to acceleration and several simple components, without requiring any adjustment. SOLUTION: This switch has the deflectable inertial mass 16 capable of operating a switching device, responding to acceleration, and the inertial mass 16 is suspended with two parallel supporting arms 12, 14 elastically deflectable, having a firmly fixed first end and a movable second end, for fitting the inertial mass 16. The inertial mass 16 has a space in each of the both sides of the mass, and is fixed to between the supporting arms 12, 14. The inertial mass 16 starts from the rest position and is deflectable in two opposite directions. The supporting arms 12, 14 form a continuous bracket enveloping the inertial mass 16. The first ends of the supporting arms 12, 14 are fixed to the inside of a base plate. The inertial mass 16 has an operating arm for the switching device. COPYRIGHT: (C)2002,JPO |
