A keypad for a mobile device having a housing comprises a plurality of keys coupled to the housing. Each of the keys has means for making the selection of smaller key sizes easier for a user. The keys may incorporate a flexible or resilient upper part, or be configured to transform to a larger surface area upon the application of pressure. The keys may be configured to rotate away from a selected key. The keys adjacent a selected key may be configured to lock mechanically or electrically. The keys may have multiple parts that are movable relative to one another. The upper part of the key may include a fluid, with a selection rod positioned inside the upper part to enter the fluid.

A keypad configuration for an electronic device has a housing (180) with one or more push buttons (110) having centers (113), a maximum radius (115), and a maximum height (215). A specific area (118) surrounds each push button and has a minimum radius (129) that is at least five times as long as the maximum radius of the push button or at least three times as long as the maximum height of the push button. No additional push buttons are within this specific area. The size, height, and spacing of the push buttons provide a point contact sensation to a user's fingertip, which prevents a user from pressing more than one key at a time and provides space for alphanumeric labels beside each push button. This keypad configuration is particularly suited for portable electronic devices where a small keypad is desirable, such as cellular telephones.

A keyboard device is located in an accommodating space of a housing having first openings and a second opening. The keyboard device includes a flexible body and a transparent liquid. The flexible body is located in the accommodating space, and includes a main body, first pressing portions, patterns, and a second pressing portion. The first pressing portions are respectively located in the first openings. The patterns are located on the main body or the first pressing portions and are respectively exposed through the first openings. The second pressing portion is located in the second opening. The main body, and the first and second pressing portions have an enclosure space therein. The transparent liquid is located in the enclosure space. When the second pressing portion is pressed, the first pressing portions expand to protrude from the first openings, such that the patterns are enlarged.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a key pad structure for small-sized electronic appliances, which can press one key at one time accurately. SOLUTION: A key pad structure for an electronic appliance includes a housing 180 equipped with one or more push buttons 110 having a center 113, max. radius 115, and max. height 215. A specific region 118 surrounds the push buttons and has a min. radius 129 at least five times as large as the max. radius of the button or at least three times as large as the max. height of the button, wherein no other push button exists in this specific region. The size, height, and spacing of the push buttons give the user a point touching sense at his finger so that he is prevented from pushing two or more keys at one time, and beside each push button, a space is provided for an alphabet/numeral label. This key pad configuration well suits a portable electronic appliance requiring small key pad, for example, a cellular telephone.
