TWO HINGE PLATES ARE FASTENED TO THE MEMBERS TO BE JOINED AND HAVE KNUCKLE EARS WHICH EXTEND FROM EACH OF THE HINGE PLATES TO COACT AND FORM A HINGE BARREL. A HINGE TUBE IS DISPOSED WITHIN HINGE BARREL AND A RESILIENT MEANS IS POSITIONED WITHIN THE HINGE TUBE AND CONNECTED TO EACH OF THE HINGE PLATES TO BIAS THE HINGE IN THE DESIRED POSITION. A HINGE PIN EXTENDS THROUGH THE HINGE TUBE TO HOLD THE HINGE ASSEMBLY IN OPERATIVE POSITION.
24 Spectacles having spring-biased hinges US3586425D 1969-06-11 US3586425A 1971-06-22 GILMAN DONALD L
Spectacle hinges are provided with spring devices biasing the temples toward one another so that, when released, the temples fold against the spectacle frame. Each spring device includes a helically coiled portion coaxial with the hinge barrel and projecting slightly above the hinge barrel. In one embodiment, the hinge pin is longer than the hinge barrel for receiving the spring device. In a preferred embodiment the spring device has a wire length that replaces the usual hinge pin.

The frame (1) comprises control means (8) for locking the first end (6) in a first position wherein the first bow (2) is placed substantially against the frame and, when actuated, for releasing the first bow (6) so that it automatically takes up a second position wherein the first bow (2) and the frame (1) define an angle of predetermined non-null value.
33 HINGE FOR AUTOMATIC CLOSURE OF SPECTACLE ARMS EP96925695.7 1996-07-10 EP0838044B1 2001-10-10 Dioguardi, Franco; Todeschini, Mario Giuseppe
This invention is a new type of articulated joint that is fitted between the tip of the arms and the front of the spectacles, by means of which hinge the arm closes automatically when it has been removed from the head or from any other agent that causes the arm to be open in relation to the front of the spectacles. The original feature of this invention is the fact that it consists of a reel or drum onto which an elastic device is wound (20) that is attached to one end of the hinge (M) and which houses and holds in position the end (21) of the spring (20). The other end (22) of the spring is fixed to the wall (14) of the box (10) that contains it and centres it. This box (10) is fitted to the other end of the hinge (A) that is to be assembled and is internally provided with viscous or antifriction material (30) that gradually makes the elastic device expand as a reaction to closure.
