224 | A METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DETECTING THE ROTATIONAL SPEED OF A ROTARY MEMBER | PCT/GB2008000027 | 2008-01-04 | WO2008081196A3 | 2008-12-24 | COX CALVIN H |
The speed of rotation of a rotary member such as a compressor or turbine wheel of a turbocharger is determined by directing an ultrasonic signal into a blade cavity and receiving the reflected signal, which is amplitude modulated by virtue of the passage of the blades across the ultrasonic transducer. The received signal is demodulated to determine the frequency of amplitude modulation of the received signal caused by passage of blades between the first and second locations. This enables the speed of rotation to be calculated. The performance of the turbocharger can thus be optimised in the context of the overall engine system via an engine control module.

227 | ACOUSTICAL IMAGING INTERFEROMETER FOR DETECTION OF BURIED UNDERWATER OBJECTS | PCT/US2004018909 | 2004-06-15 | WO2005029116A2 | 2005-03-31 | ERIKSON KENNETH R |
Techniques for underwater detection of fully or partially buried objects such as sea mines and underwater cables are disclosed. An acoustical camera produces three dimensional volumetric images of a target area volume of an underwater floor. One or more first images are produced of the target area volume. An acoustical transducer pulse is then directed to the target area volume so as to disturb the loose particulate or elastic matter included in the target area. One or more second images are then produced while the pulse is present in the target area volume. The images can be compared for evidence of buried objects, or to otherwise evaluate objects included in the target area. The camera can be configured with an interferometer mode so as to produce volumetric images at a real time frame rate.

An electrical discharge produces an acoustic impulse, and a reflection of the impulse from the upper coin in a coin stack is sensed so that the level of the coin stack can be determined from the time taken for the reflection to be received. Alternatively, or additionally, the acoustic impulse can be used to detect coin jams, the presence and/or width of a coin store, the state of a coin routing gate or the quantity of a vendible product.
229 | METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ACOUSTIC DETECTION OF MINES AND OTHER BURIED MAN-MADE OBJECTS | PCT/US9814443 | 1998-07-15 | WO9904287B1 | 1999-04-01 | DONSKOY DIMITRI M; SUTIN ALEXANDER M |
A device (10) which employs an acoustic signal having one or more frequencies for penetrating into ground, water, or sediments and vibrating a compliant buried object (8) is provided. When these acoustic signals encounter an acoustically compliant object (8) such as a mine, the acoustic signals vibrate the compliant object (8), leading to a vibration of the compliant object (8) against the boundaries of the surrounding medium such as ground sediment, creating a nonlinear distortion of the probing signal including the generation of harmonics and acoustic waves with combination frequencies (nonlinear signals). These nonlinear vibrating signals are received from the surface by a sensor (20). The amplitude of the measured nonlinear signals indicates the presence of an acoustically compliant object (8) such as a mine. The present invention also relates to a method and apparatus which emits an electromagnetic RF probing signal and acoustic or vibration signal (modulating signal), detects the reflected electromagnetic signal from the buried object (8), and processes the received signal, identifying the modulation caused by vibration.
