A portable humidifier including an evaporator pan adapted to be mounted in the plenum of a furnace, a heating element in the evaporator pan connected to the furnace motor circuit, a reservoir mounted at a point remote from the evaporator pan and at the same level, a conduit connecting the reservoir to the evaporator, a source of water connected to the reservoir through a restricted conduit, a solenoid actuated control valve connected to control the flow of water through the restricted conduit and a double acting mercury switch mounted on a float in the reservoir to control the operation of the solenoid valve and to disable the heating element when the water in the evaporator pan drops below the heating element.

Humidification and heating apparatus preferably including a spirally wound resistance-heated plate with its axis vertical and one side in thermal contact with a sheet of water absorbent material. Both plate and material are partially immersed in water in a tank the lid of which is sealingly engaged with the spiral plate. When used for artificial respiration air from a respirator is admitted and discharged from the tank at points such that it must travel along the spiral passage formed by the plate, water surface and lid thus picking up heat and water vapor to emerge preferably substantially saturated at a temperature which does not exceed the maximum desired input temperature at the patient. To prevent condensation en route to the end user, sufficient further heat is imparted to balance that lost in passage. Preferably the interconnecting apparatus between the humidifier and patient is heated at least in portions along its length and preferably by electrically heated elements embedded in the wall of the usual flexible tube leading from the humidifier to the patient.

An electric steam vaporizer has a water container with a top opening covered by a removable cap having depending therefrom a heating chamber. The heating chamber includes a lower portion of lesser cross section containing an electrode assembly for vaporizing water entering the chamber through an inlet in the lower portion. The cap has secured thereto a double-walled airfilled insulating chamber surrounding the heating chamber and spaced from the lower portion thereof. The insulating chamber forms a thermal insulation barrier between the heating chamber and the water in the outer parts of the container. The insulating chamber engages a pair of ribs arising from the container bottom to limit water flow out of the space between the insulating and heating chambers.

A heating device for rapidly elevating the temperature of a fluent material after the material is discharged from a pressurized container. The heating device comprises a stepdown transformer having a tubular secondary winding for carrying and heating the fluent material. The secondary winding is positioned so that the material discharged from the container flows into the tubular secondary, is heated as it flows therethrough, and is discharged therefrom as a heated product ready for use. The transformer is mounted on a discharge block adapted for mating with a valve stem of the container. The arrangement is such that manually induced downward movement of the transformer and discharge block causes the discharge valve of the container to be opened to cause flow of material through the secondary and out a discharge spout.

A safety device for a steam vaporizer having a liquid reservoir base with a removable top. A pair of electrodes depend from the top into the reservoir base for heating a liquid. To remove the top from the base, spaced terminals provided in a terminal block must be disengaged from shorting conductors on the base reservoir, thereby opening the power circuit to the electrodes, In one embodiment, the terminal block is an integral part of the top. In another embodiment, the block is secured to the top by connector cord of such length that the block terminals must be disengaged from the shorting conductors in order to remove the top with its dependent electrodes from the base.
