Tongs arms 10 are urged together against a resilient bias to bring halves 2 of a chamber firmly together. The substantially closed and relatively small chamber quickly starves a burning candlewick 17 of oxygen, which causes its flame to be extinguished without residual smoke. The tongs are then drawn upwardly with the two chamber halves 2 still firmly urged together, such that opposing edges of a gap in the base of the closed chamber are drawn over the wick 17. The wick 17 itself passes through the gap, but any deposits 18 on the wick 17 are too small to pass through the gap. Thus, the opposing edges of the chamber halves 2 gently rub any carbon or other deposits 18 off the wick 17 to effect a cleaning or trimming action on the wick 17. Deposits 18 that are trimmed from the wick 17 in this way are retained inside the chamber and do not drop into the molten wax 16. |

A burning candle (5, 8) is provided with a sleeve (7, 7') of heat-shrinkable plastics. When affected by the heat generated by the flame (6) of the lit candle the sleeve (7, 7') shrinks and at least partly closes about the end of the candle (5, 8), thus extinguishing the candle flame (6).

PURPOSE:To prevent fire hazard, by providing a temperature sensing flame- extinguishing device, which is opened by receiving heat higher than a predetermined temperature and feeds a flame extinguishing agent into a flame chamber from a flame extinguishing agent tank in the flame chamber, and to prevent the sensing device from being broken by providing an air reservoir to the sensing device. CONSTITUTION:When much carbon is deposited on the wall of a hot air diffusion cylinder 1 or on a flame tray 22, fuel for secondary combustion happens to spill out of the flame tray 22 and burn in a flame chamber 2. In such a case, a temperature sensor 4 senses the temperature, melting a flame extinguishing agent and feeding it to the flame chamber 2 to extinguish flames before the combustion flames moves to the suction side 18 and goes out of the chamber 2, so that fire hazard can be prevented. Because the temperature sensor 4 is provided in the position where the temperature is high, it can sense hot temperature at a very early period, and it enables to heighten the effect to prevent fire hazard furthermore. In cold winter, if the flame extinguishing agent is frozen and is expanded, an air reservoir around the agent can alleviate the pressing pressure produced by expansion and prevent it from being loaded on the sensing part 28 of a sensing device 4, so that the sensing part 28 is prevented from being broken.

PURPOSE:To reduce an upstanding flame and the development of soot at the time of extinguishing, by providing a pressure equalizing valve communicating an oil tank with an atmosphere and by providing a small chamber communicating a wick guiding cylinder. CONSTITUTION:At the time of extinguishing, most unburnt gas present in a space 13 above and below a wick flows into a small chamber 15 through a slit opening 16 to mix with an air flowed from an extinguishing port 14 defined through the outer peripheral wall of the chamber 15. An explosive combustion takes place inside the chamber 15 by an ignition from a small tray. A resultant blast is blown to inside the space 13 above and below the wick for thereby extinguishing the fire with no smell accompanied. At this moment, the inner pressure of chamber 4 of oil tank 1 is momentarily increased. However, a pressure equalizing valve 20 is opened and therefore the chamber 4 does not raise its pressure. In consequence, the unburnt gas does not pass through a clearance defined between wick guiding cylinders 8, 9 and a wick 7, whereby substantially reducing the amount of unburnt gas present in the space 13 above and below the wick. Thus, it becomes possible to reduce an offensive smell which would otherwise accompany with the extinguishing action.

PURPOSE:To permit the adjustment of flame and the instantaneous extinguishing of fire of a wick by a method in which the wick is vertical moved by operating a knob, and the wick is instantaneously dropped only by displacing a manually operable knob for lowering the wick to a small extent. CONSTITUTION:A lever 60 is rotatably supported on the supporting shaft of a claw plate 32, and a spring 63 to regulate the rotation of the lever 60 under its own weight is attached to a bent piece. The projection 65 provided to one end of the claw plate 32 is positioned in a notch formed at the lower edge of the lever 60. The knob 67 is operated by a manually operable knob for lowering the wick, attached to the outside of the free end part of the lever 60 when the lever 60 is manually operated downwards. When the lever 60 is forcibly operated downwards, the notch is coupled with the projection 65, and the claw plate 32 is counteclockwisely turned against the spring 36. The coupling of the claw plate 32 and a gear 29 is released, the wick 4 is quickly lowered by the recovery force of a return spring 9 and a coil spring 43, and fire is extinguished.

PURPOSE:To make instant fire extinction at a time of an overturn of a combustor reliable and to improve safety by providing a releasing device so that an opening and closing shutter for an ignition access hole is released when a liquid fuel combustor is overturned forwards. CONSTITUTION:At a time of ignition, an ignition window is opened by the action of an operation unit 25 and a shutter 24. When this instrument is overturned forwards, the ignition window 23 is opened because an ignition button 30 is pressed in by a floor and a combustion cylinder knob 18 is tumbled to the front, which touches a lower reflecting plate 2 and serves as a fulcrum. Then, a combustion cylinder 13 is turned over and is separated from fire grates 11 and 12. And air becomes inflowable through the opened ignition window 23 as shown by an arrow A, and the gas remaining at the upper part of a wick 7 lowered by an extinguishing device not illustrated herein is diluted. Therefore, instant fire extinction becomes possible and safety can be improved.
