An electroosmotic pump includes first and second electrodes which, during operation of the pump, are maintained at a potential difference of, for example, at least about 10V. A membrane intermediate the first and second electrodes includes fibers of an inorganic oxide, such as glass. A surface of the fibers may be functionalized to increase a charge on the membrane with, for example a silane derivative, such as a trialkoxysilane. A fluid in contact with the membrane is drawn through the membrane without the need for moving parts.

3 Reciprocating fluid pumps with chromium nitride coated components in contact with non-metallic packing and gasket materials for increased seal life US09243517 1999-02-01 US06212997B1 2001-04-10 Mark W. McCollough; Joseph J. Karbowniczek
Chromium nitride coating of machine components such as reciprocating pump plungers for continuous sliding contact with non-metallic packing and gasket materials greatly increases the performance life of fluid seals. In an air driven reciprocating constant pressure pump, exterior surfaces of the pump plunger are coated with chromium nitride to a thickness of seven to ten microns. The coating resists failure from repeated sliding contact against non-metallic packing and gasket materials for at least four million pump cycles, with no evidence of cracking or release of metallic particles which would embed in the packing or gasket material and score the plunger. In lower pressure pumps, interior walls of a housing against which a sliding gasket bears, when coated with chromium nitride, greatly increase the seal life of the sliding gasket.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface protection film capable of controlling the intrusion of corrosive gas better than before. SOLUTION: The surface protection film includes yttria (Y 2O 3) as a principal component and cerium. By containing cerium, defects such as minute pores in the film are decreased and the intrusion of corrosive gas can be controlled. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT

A method for assembling towers using prestressed concrete segments has holes incorporated through the segments to take tensioning cables. The holes are spaced around the circumference of each segment and align with similar holes in the adjacent segments. To ease the feeding of the tensioning cable the top of each hole has a tapering profile, with the widest aperture at the entry to the hole. The taper is between 10 and 150 deg. and the widest aperture is less than the wall thickness of the segments. The holes are formed by performs fitted into the moulds for the segments.
