121 Retrievable bit and eccentric reamer assembly US748410 1991-08-22 US5186265A 1993-02-16 Randy H. Henson; Lloyd A. Baillie
A retrievable drill bit and cutter or reamer assembly includes a fluid-drive motor, an eccentric cutter part and a concentric bit in assembly and insertable in and retrievable from the interior of a drill stem without removing the drillstem from a wellbore. The eccentric cutter is disposed on a shaft connected to the output shaft of the motor and journals an accentric cylindrical bearing member mounted on the shaft. In response to rotation of the shaft in one direction, the cutter part is displaced into a position to enlarge the wellbore to permit progress of the drillstem therethrough and in response to rotation in the opposite direction, the cutter centers itself to permit retrieval of the bit assembly throught the drillstem. The fluid-driven motor engages locking splines on a sub at the lower end of the drillstem and may be inserted in and retrieved from the drillstem by drilling fluid in forward and reverse circulation, respectively.
122 Flushing means for drilling tools US503813 1990-04-03 US5040621A 1991-08-20 Stig U. Lof
A flushing device for drilling tools comprises a guide member (10) carrying a drill bit (20) and being rotatably centered by the mouth of a casing tube (11) which is adapted to follow the drilling tool downhole during drilling. The drill bit (20) has a bit portion (22) that projects laterally beyond and is spaced axially in front of the casing tube (11) so as to drill a hole larger than the casing tube (11). There are external flushing grooves (70,71) on the guide member (10) adapted to lead the outflow of flushing medium and debris from the hole during drilling into the casing tube (11). At least one of these grooves (70) extends from front to rear of the guide member (10). One or more further grooves (71) are open towards said rear while ending blindly into the periphery of the guide member (10) spaced from its front. By retraction of the guide member (10) its front enters the casing tube (11). That closes the blind grooves (71) and an intensified flushing is thus possible via the remaining open grooves (70) that extends from front to rear of the guide member (10). The cutting front (40) of the bit portion (22) is flushed rotatively in counter flow to the rotational drilling direction (8) towards the full length groove (70).
123 Drill assembly US552921 1990-07-16 US5009271A 1991-04-23 Milan Maric; John I. Kulas
Drill tools with eccentric bits for drilling a hole having a large diameter generally include a bit for swinging out to an eccentric position for drilling, and for swinging into a non-eccentric position for removal from a tubular casing. Relatively complicated structures are required for effecting bit movement, and it is often difficult to remove the bit for replacement or repair. A drill assembly offering a solution to both problems includes a mandrel for rotatable mounting in a tubular casing, a bit rotatably mounted in the mandrel, the bit and mandrel normally rotating together in one direction with the bit eccentric with respect to the mandrel, whereby the bit can bore a hole larger in diameter than the casing, a head on the bit for engaging a formation to stop rotation of the bit, shoulders on the bit and mandrel for retaining the bit in the eccentric drilling position, and inclined cam surface on the bit for engaging the bottom of the casing when the bit is moved upwardly to cause the bit to rotate in the other direction (opposite to the drilling direction) to a release position in which the bit is aligned with the casing for movement therethrough, and second shoulders on the mandrel and bit for limiting rotation of the bit to the release position. The shoulders on the mandrel and bit are in the forms of projections which overlap in the vertical direction, each projection defining approximately one-quarter of the cylinder for rotation between the bit extended and the bit retracted positions.
124 Drill bit for core boring US914926 1986-10-03 US4760888A 1988-08-02 Makoto Saito
A drill bit for core boring of the type provided with a multi-layered bit head, so constructed that when the blades of the upper-layered bit head have become worn out, it is possible to easily withdraw them without removing the bit from the bore. The core boring operation is then continued without delay by using the blades of the newly exposed lower-layered bit head. The drill bit is also so constructed that it is possible to eliminate any displacement of the upper layer blades from their fitted position on the blades of the lower layer blades during drilling by using the upper layer blades and at the same time, it is possible to easily disengage the engagement between the bit body and the upper layer blades when the upper layer blades have become worn out.
125 Collapsible cutterhead for drilling upward US787283 1977-04-13 US4083416A 1978-04-11 Norman H. Still; Robert W. Berry, Jr.
A cutterhead adapted for drilling a hole upwardly in the earth, and to then be withdrawn downwardly through a casing which is inserted underneath the cutterhead, characterized by gauge cutters which are pivotally mounted on the cutterhead so that they will pivot upward and radially inward when the cutterhead is drawn into the casing, and also characterized by stabilizer rollers mounted on removable frames that can be detached.
126 Method and means for drilling US32863173 1973-02-01 US3848683A 1974-11-19 PERSSON J
A method and a means for drilling in which a drilling tool is adapted to drill and to ream a flushed hole in advance of trailing casing tube means while flushing medium is returned via the casing tubes. Peripheral crushing and wedging of oversized drilling debris in the casing tube means is avoided and more efficient flushing is gained by sifting the flushing medium through a narrow slot around the tool at the mouth of the casing tube means. The slot is constantly centralized partly by a centric drill bit forwardly of eccentric reamer edges on the tool and further by the rear end of the latter being slidably supported in the casing tube means adjacent the mouth thereof.
127 Earth drilling apparatus US3756331D 1971-07-29 US3756331A 1973-09-04 OKUYAMA Y; TAKANO S; SUZUKI R
A drilling system wherein, even if the drilling direction is not only a downward direction but also any direction, a core can be collected and, even in the case of reaming a part of the bore in the course and also of replacing the bit, the bit can be replaced without recovering the drill stem inserted in the bore.

129 Drill bit with pivoting cutting portion US3648789D 1969-09-25 US3648789A 1972-03-14 ERIKSSON AKE SIGVARD
An adapter comprising an upper part and a lower part hingedly interconnected by a bolt disposed excentrically to a drill string axis carries a drill bit at the lower end of the lower part. The adapter and bit is carried through a tubular casing so that the bit and lower part are below the casing. The string is rotated so that the bit and lower part swings out and undercuts the casing.
130 Retractable drill bits US3603413D 1969-10-03 US3603413A 1971-09-07 GRILL WERNER K; LINK HOWARD D
Rotary drill bit cutters lowered on a carrier through a tubular drill string to a drive mandrel or body at the lower end of the string. A device orients or aligns the cutters with slots in the mandrel into which the cutters are expanded and then locked in expanded condition by the carrier, enabling drilling torque and weight to be transmitted from the rotating drill string and mandrel to the cutters, causing the latter to produce a cutting action in the formation. Elevation of the carrier retracts the cutters inwardly of the mandrel for withdrawal through the drill string to the drilling rig. The carrier may support a core tube for receiving a core produced by the cutters.
