1 Tumbler wheel structure for radiological detector resistant combination lock US152892 1988-02-05 US4803859A 1989-02-14 Harry C. Miller; Stephen Helesfai
A combination lock of the type adapted for changing of the combination by a change key, a lock case housing, a stack of a plurality of tumbler wheels loosely journaled on a tumbler post for rotation about its axis and each including an annular outer rim portion and an inner annular hub portion having teeth releasably intercoupling the hub portion and rim portion at any of a plurality of relative angular positions. The rim portions of the tumbler wheels have specially shaped peripheral gates to receive confronting portions of a fence on the fence lever when the tumbler wheels are properly aligned. The tumbler post is supported within the tumbler wheel hub portions for nonrotatable axial movement to shift the hub portions axially relative to the outer rim portions between coupled and decoupled relation. An actuator is activated by rotation of the change key for axially moving the tumbler post and the tumbler wheel hub portions to shift the hub portions to decoupled relation for combination change and a secondary change fence member is moveable into inserted relation in the tumbler wheel gates and retractable therefrom upon movement the of the actuator to selectively hold the rim portion against rotation.
2 Security system US842141 1986-03-21 US4693100A 1987-09-15 Leonard R. Wetz, Jr.
A security system having a secure enclosure for holding an object. Access to the enclosure is controlled by a combination lock having a tumbler arrangement adapted for having its combination changed either by hand or with use of a key. The tumbler arrangement includes an apparatus for mounting a plurality of tumbler wheels in a stacked relationship for rotation about an axis. Each of the tumbler wheels has an inner element releasably engaged with a circumferentially disposed outer element. Each of the outer elements has a peripheral gate and a mechanism for masking the gate. A mechanism is provided for maintaining the inner and outer elements in an engaged condition for simultaneous rotation under normal tumbler operation, and a peripherally gated rotatable driver wheel rotates the tumbler wheels. A fence lever includes a nose for contact with the driver wheel and a fence for contact with the tumbler wheels. The tumbler arrangement also includes an apparatus for preventing contact by the fence with the circumferential edges of the tumbler wheels while the tumbler wheels are being rotated. Finally, a mechanism is provided for axially disengaging the stacked inner elements from the stacked outer elements by the key while simultaneously preventing rotational and axial movement of the outer elements as the disengaged inner elements are rotated to change the combination of the tumbler arrangement in the combination lock.

11 Radiographically secure combination lock US593553 1975-07-07 US3983727A 1976-10-05 Orin H. Todd
A wheel pack and fence utilized to form a radiographically secure combinan lock are disclosed. The wheel pack includes three or more wheels. Each wheel of the wheel pack has a plurality of gates formed in the wheel. Half of the plurality of gates on each wheel are cut halfway through on one side and the other half of the plurality of gates are cut halfway through the other side. The gates are cut in the shape of right triangles and are so positioned that the hypotenuse of each triangular gate on one side of a wheel intersects the hypotenuse of a triangular gate on the other side of that wheel. The fence which must drop into a gate of each wheel to withdraw the lock bolt is designed to contact only one-half of each wheel of the wheel pack. The fence is shaped to fit into a triangular gate of each wheel that is identical in shape and orientation to the fence. There is only one gate on each wheel that matches the fence and therefore there is only one true gate on each wheel. All the rest of the gates are false gates. However, since all the gates, whether true or false, have a mirror image gate immediately behind them they all look the same on a flat X-ray plate or to a counter recording the strength of a gamma neutron source.

19 Anti-manipulation device for permutation locks US641246 1975-12-16 US4040280A 1977-08-09 James Main; Leslie Robert Moss; Ralph Perryman
This invention is concerned with permutation locks having a wheel pack comprising a plurality of rotatable permutation discs, each having a recess which must be correctly aligned before the bolt of the lock can be withdrawn. One known method for determining the positions of the permutation discs is by analysis of X-radiation which has passed through the wheel pack parallel to the axis of rotation of the discs. In locks according to this invention, the opacity of the wheel pack to penetrating electromagnetic radiation along any line parallel to the axis of rotation of the discs is independent of their orientation.
