4 Ship lock system with hydroelectric pumped-storage capability US085848 1979-10-17 US4310769A 1982-01-12 Frank L. Mazzone; Joseph E. Tegda
A ship lock system having a ship lock interconnecting two bodies of water at different water levels. The system includes one or more underground hydroelectric pumped-storage units connected by one or more penstocks with the ship lock which serves as the upper reservoir to the pumped-storage units so that water can be drained from the ship lock through the penstocks to drive one or more reversible pump-turbines of the pumped-storage units which generates electrical energy, particularly during high demand hours for electrical energy. A lower reservoir adjacent to the pump-turbines is used to store the water which drives the turbines. The lowering of the water in the ship lock permits ships which entered the lock at the upper water level to leave the lock at the lower water level. By a pumping action, the pump-turbines can pump the water from the reservoir upward into the ship lock through the penstocks, particularly during periods of low power demand. The electrical power for accomplishing the pumping action can be supplied from other conventional energy sources as well as from tidal, wind, solar and other emerging energy sources. The raising of the water in the ship lock permits ships which entered the lock at the lower water level to leave the lock at the upper water level.
5 SHIP LIFT SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR TRANSPORTATION OF SHIPS WITH RECYCLING WATER SYSTEM IN CANAL US09791645 2001-02-26 US20020119010A1 2002-08-29 Felipe Antonio Len-Rios
A process for raising or lowering ships from one elevation to another within a locks chambers and simultaneously recycling the water using a hydraulic storage tank. The hydraulic storage tank is located adjacent to the locks chambers and below the minimum level that the ship is to be lowered to within the locks structures. The hydraulically pressurized water storage tank system fills the locks chambers and raises the ship. The ship is lowered in the locks chambers by water flowing by gravity back into the empty water storage tank. The water flow is directed by an energy system that applies hydraulic power, compressed air or any other device that is capable of moving a stainless steel plate or similar device inside the storage tank. The energy system directs the flow of water from the storage tank to the locks chamber to raise the water level. The empty hydraulic storage tank will then receive the flow of water from the locks chamber by gravity when a ship is lowered. The water-saving ship-lift system represented in this invention is beneficial because it achieves the vertical movement of vessels within a canal lock chamber in a safe and efficient manner while, at the same time, recycling precious fresh water for use over and over again with little or no waste.
6 System And Method For Hydraulic Displacement US12225146 2007-02-23 US20090162145A1 2009-06-25 Terry Fogarty
A system and method for hydraulic displacement is described which can provide an improved method for raising or lowering a fluid level. The system and method has direct application to inland waterway transport and in particular to canal locks where canal boats traverse inclines through a series of locks. In addition, the invention can provide the access to a marina, which may be raised up above sea level or behind a sea wall defence. The method enables the formation of an improved hydraulic displacement lock capable of a greater vertical displacement with greatly reduced flow of fluid through the lock. The hydraulic displacement lock comprises an enclosed central channel, having sequential fluid storage tanks connected to the central channel. When the central channel is closed at its lower end, opening and closing connecting channels to the sequential storage tanks allows fluid to flow under the force of gravity into or out of the central channel, thereby raising or lowering the level of fluid.
7 Watercraft lock US11740833 2007-04-26 US07520231B2 2009-04-21 Richard B. Bishop
A watercraft transport lock includes a walled structure that can be filled and emptied of water received from two separate bodies of water for the purpose of transporting a boat or other watercraft between the two bodies of water. The system prevents the water of one body from mixing with the water of the other body. This is accomplished by removing the water of the first body of water from within the structure prior to filling the structure with the water from the other body. A boat support may be used to support the boat during the emptying and filling processes.
