The invention is concerned with the construction and detection of sequences of symbols containing sub-sequences which satisfy a unique equation. Symbols may be binary or non binary and the unique equation may be based on a logic function or a function using Galois field arithmetic. Multiple transmitters using distinct sequences may communicate or send remote commands to a receiver, which only needs to employ a single detector. Sequences could be used for frame synchronisation or similar. A sliding window is applied to the input bitstream and bits within the window fed into logic embodying the equation. The output of the logic circuit is fed to an up/down counter which accumulates the output. When the desired sequence is input the count will exceed a threshold, thereby indicating sequence reception. Reception can be done asynchronously with oversampling, to avoid the need for clock recovery. Sequence lengths and thresholds can be in/decreased to vary robustness in the presence of noise or similar.
