1293085 Alkylation-reforming process UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 12 March 1970 11897/70 Heading C5E High octane motor fuel is produced by (a) alkylating an isobutane fraction with a C 4 monoolefin with a catalyst under alkylation conditions to give an alkylate product containing dimethylhexanes; (b) separating the alkylate product into (i) a low-boiling, high-octane fraction and (ii) a high-boiling, low-octane fraction which has a higher dimethylhexane content than (i) and an initial b.p. of 93-110‹ C.; (c) reforming at least a portion of (ii) with H 2 and a catalyst to give a higher octane reformate; and (d) mixing at least a portion of the reformate with (i) and recovering a motor fuel with a higher octane number than the alkylate product of (a). Fraction (ii) may comprise 30-60 vol. per cent of the alkylate product. Suitable alkylation catalysts are HF, H 2 SO 4 or mixtures of H 2 SO 4 and H 3 PO 4 . Suitable reforming catalysts comprise Pt or Pd, a halogen and optionally Re supported on alumina; alternatively a chromiaalumina catalyst may be used.
