145 LAYERS DURABLY BONDED TO SURFACES PCT/US2009/038931 2009-03-31 WO2009124034A1 2009-10-08 ZABINSKI, Jeffrey S.

A method and class of bond coat is provided herein that physically and chemically bonds solid layer lubricants and other functional coatings to a substrate by burnishing, for example, selected soft materials, including oxides such as antimony trioxide which is seen as a major improvement over conventional bonding or coating methods. The process is non-vacuum at ambient temperatures, no binders, adhesives, curing or baking. Lubricant performance can be enhanced by orders of magnitude compared to when the bond coat and burnishing process are not applied. The method is inexpensive, environmentally friendly, applicable to any substrate material, and scalable.

146 PERFECT BOOK BINDING SYSTEM PCT/US0017304 2000-06-23 WO0100423A3 2008-03-06 CARLSON MICHAEL W; TAPSCOTT JOSEPH C; WALDEN GEORGE
A system for automating the creation of a printing master and a cover template for a document so that the cover would perfectly wrap around the document to form a book. The system prepares the document for binding by setting up page-by-page printing instructions, scaling the document if required, and setting up a template for a cover. The system sets up printing instructions for the document by collecting instructions for each page "range" in the book. The operator of the application may specify the type of paper to be used for each of the page ranges and the printing format. Once the page range printing instructions have been specified, the system next determines the size requirements for the cover based on the size of the original file and the thickness of the document, which is based on the type of paper used and the number of pages involved for each type of paper. The application optimizes ("scales") the text and page size to fit within the cover. Finally, the system next creates three output files: (1) the formatted document, (2) a template for the cover, and (3) a job summary file.

159 A SYSTEM FOR AND A METHOD OF PRODUCING A BOOK ON DEMAND PCT/US2005/027817 2005-08-05 WO2006020501A3 2006-02-23 DOBROVOLSKY, Sasha

A system for manufacturing a book on demand includes a first printing unit for printing a first component of the book (i.e. a cover), a second printing unit for printing a second component of the book (i.e. a text block), and a binding station for binding the first component and the second component together. The system may further include a computer control system receiving information relating to the book to be manufactured, the information comprising information relating to the content of said first or second component and information relating to the finished size of the book. The computer control system initiates among other functions-manufacture of the first component by said first printing unit, receives a signal that the printing of the first component is successful and, after receipt of this signal, initiates printing of the second component by said second printing unit. The first component could be stored in a buffer until the second component is ready. The advantage of this hierarchy is that the process which is more time consuming and/or sensitive with respect to disturbances and/or more expensive can control the over-all process. Rejects of completed books not fulfilling the quality criteria are avoided and down-times minimized. Also avoided is the requirement to store the second component until the first component is ready.
