A bookbinding structure (16) for binding a stack of sheets including an elongated substrate (18) having a first surface on which a first, heat activated, adhesive (20A) is disposed and a second surface on which a second, pressure activated adhesive (22) is disposed. A bookbinding system and method of binding books including a cover/spine assembly (10) having a relatively rigid cover section (14) with a length and width at least as great as that of the stack of sheets (22) to be bound and a spine section (12) having a width greater than the height of the stack (22). The cover/spine assembly (10) and the spine section (12) are secured together along the length of the cover section (14) so that the spine section (12) can be folded along a first edge (20) with respect to the cover/spine assembly (10). A heat activated matrix (18) is disposed on the spine section (12) including a central adhesive band (18B) and a second edge (12A) of the spine section (12). Binding is carried out by placing the stack (22) over the cover section (14) and folding the spine section (12) over the edge of the stack (22).

A lower die (54) is supported on an upper surface of the lower die holder (52) and an upper die (50) is supported on the lower surface of the upper die holder (48). An actuating structure such as a handle (56), is used to move the upper (50) and lower (54) die between an open position and a closed where the upper (50) and lower die (54) score the cover (2). The upper die holder (48) is fabricated using a transparent material so that a user can view the upper die (50) and underlying cover (2) to facilitate proper alignment.

A method for making a book is provided in the embodiments of the present invention. The method mainly comprises: cutting printed sheets for a book, brushing glue onto edges of the printed sheets, bonding the printed sheets through the glue, and positioning and fixing a plurality of bonded printed sheets by utilizing a right-angled mold; perforating each of the positioned and fixed printed sheets, and stringing holes of the printed sheets so as to reinforce the printed sheets; and splicing front endpaper and rear endpaper onto endpaper connection cloth, and then bonding the endpaper and bookblocks. The embodiments of the present invention adopt a right-angled mold to position, register and fix a plurality of bonded printed sheets, and pages are unlikely to dislocate, thereby guaranteeing the binding quality of the book, improving the attractiveness of the book, reducing a making time of the book, and improving the production efficiency of the book. The method of the present invention can break through a size limitation of a traditional book at 787*544mm, thereby making a book of a greater size.

Methods for binding books are provided. In such methods a cover made of a flexible material is provided and a block-book is formed joining a number of signatures and applying glue along the spine of the signatures. The book-block is coupled with the cover, obtaining a bound book. The spine of the bound book is rounded off, in order to give the book an outwardly convex spine. The rounded shape of the spine is maintained for a time interval sufficient to allow drying of the glue within the bound book, and finally the book is trimmed. Mit einem derartigen Bindeelement (10) und einer erfindungsgemäßen Vorrichtung ist es möglich, ein kostengünstiges, stabiles und ästhetisches Binden von Druckseiten durchzuführen, so dass das gebundene Druckerzeugnis eine Mehrzahl von Mittelbögen enthält und beim Lesen flach aufliegt.
