CONSTITUTION: Nitrate suce as NaNO
3 etc. and organic carbonaceous compound such as glucose etc., are added to the sludge generated at the time of treating waste water by activated sludge method and denifrifying reaction is promoted by denitrifying bacteria in the sludge. It is preferable to add said nitrate in such an amt. that the nitric acid type nitrogen in the suldge exists at about ≥30ppm. Also, treating condition other than adding nitrate and organic carbonaceous compound, is preferable to be in the normal condition of denitrifying reaction, for example, 0W50°C, especially 25±5°C, 6W8pH. Next, the sludge having a high concentration of solid matter, which is floated by generated N
2 gas, is separated by the normal solid- liquid separation means and on the one hand, separated liquid is returned to the purifying process. Further, deterioration of quality of treated water, is restrained by decreasing the concentration of NO
3
- in the separated liquid, since the NO
3
- can't be decomposed in the purifying process.
