The element 2 is formed by using a lead zirconate titanate sintered body and a back surface electrode 1' comprising Al or Au is formed to the back surface of the element. DC voltage is applied between the electrodes 1A, 1B to polarize the same to mutually reverse directions as shown by arrows 4 in the direction vertical to the light receiving surface of infrared rays 5.
