CONSTITUTION: Fast neutrons emitted by the neutron source 10 are transmitted through a neutron source storage pipe 9, then transmitted through a measurement system box 7 and the neutron absorption pipe 6, and made incident on a neutron absorber and reflecting material 8. They lose energy to change into thermal neutrons, which are diffused. A specific amount of them travel to the absorption pipe 6. The thermal neutrons are absorbed partially by the absorption pipe 6 and the remainder is transmitted through the box 7 and detected by the detector 11. Then the extent of the absorption by the absorption pipe 6 is determined according to its absorption characteristics. Therefore, the intensity of the fast neutrons from the absorption pipe 6 and the ratio of the neutrons which change into the thermal neutrons and then travel to the absorption pipe 6 are found to obtain the absorption rate of the thermal neutron by the detection pipe 6, i.e. the absorption characteristics from the inspection result of the neutron flux value obtained by the detector 11 without any destruction.
