CONSTITUTION: ZrSiO

4 . Blended raw material 4 is then charged into Acheson furnace 1, where it is heated to about 1600°C under a reducing atmosphere by supplying an electric current to electric resistance heating element A from guide electrodes 5, thereby inducing the following reaction; ZrSiO
4 +6C→ZrC+SiC+4CO. The resulting ZrC has high hardness and high heat resistance, so it is used as a cutting tool material, heat resistant special ceramics, etc.
