PROCESS: A β-keto-acid ester of formula IV: (Z is OC

5 ) or a β-keto-acid amide (Z is NH

3 , etc.) is reacted with a thiosemicarbazide of formula V under acidic conditions to form the compound of formula I, II or III. Alternatively, the compound of formula IV is reacted with the compound of formula V under neutral or weakly acidic conditions to give a β-keto-acid ester thiosemicarbazone, which is reacted under strongly acidic conditions.
