Photons are generated from nitrogen atoms in the substance 18 as a result, of activation of atomic nucleus of the nitrogen atoms by an X-ray from the supply source 12. The nitrogen-activated atomic nucleus isotropically emits positrons. These positrons couple electrons in an annihilation process to generate two photons, which can be detected with the detector 20.
