Then, the second key lever 13 carrying thereon at least fifty sounds of the Japanese syllabary is operated to shift link 30, arm 28, link 26 and arm 25 in the direction of arrow 99 and to turn type bar 22 of a longitudinal type selecting mechanism 19 in the direction of arrow 109, thereby starting typing onto platen 20 having a typewriting paper wound therearound. When typing characters onto platen 20 by the aid of bar 22, stopper member 73 attached to reel 58 is turned to the position where stopper 71 is attracted by magnet 67 and retained at the position, and bar 23 is turned while reeling out tape-like type band 61 wound around the bar 23.
