CONSTITUTION: The objective bisabolol oxide of formula I or formula II [2-(1- hydroxy-1-methyl )ethyl-5-methyl-( 4-methyl-3-cyclohexen-1-yl)tetrahydrofuran] having suppressing effect to edema, mild spasmolytic effect to smooth muscle and moderate antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities and free of skin irritation and sensitization, can be produced either by reacting α-bisabolol with H
2 O
2 or an organic peracid such as m-chloroperbenzoic acid at -20W+100°C, or by reacting α-bisabolol with a hydroperoxide such as an aqueous solution of cumene hydroperoxide at 50W150°C in the presence of a metallic catalyst composed of V or Mo derivative.
