CONSTITUTION: A portion of H
2 S contained in a gas delivered from a gasification and desulfurizing until 1 is oxidized in the Claus unit 3 with air to form S, which is recovered 29 in a sulfur-recovering unit 10. The residual gas contg. H
2 S, SO
2 , COS, CS
2 is led to a Bebbon unit 4, where it is reduced in the presence of Co/Mo catalyst, so that the S cpds. are converted to H
2 S. The H
2 S-contg. gas is oxidized by passing it through a strettford unit constituted of a cooling and absorption unit 6, an oxidation unit 7, and a reslurry unit 8. After separation of S from the soln. having been used for the oxidation of the gas, supernatant cycle soln. is drawn off and delivered to a waste soln.-treating unit 9, where it is adjusted to a pH not higher than 3, then oxidized and decomposed by blowing air into it. The SO
2 -contg. air thus formed is circulated to the Claus process or the reduction process.
