A row of building support structures is positioned on the foundation, preferably below grade level, one such supporting structure being provided for each modular unit. Alternate ones of the supporting structures are permanently fixed in place, but the remaining supporting structures have associated therewith a jacking means capable of raising a modular unit supported thereon by an amount at least equal to the height of such modular unit. In assembling the building, a plurality of modules is placed on the supporting structures and secured together, after which the interconnected modules are raised by the jacking means. After having been raised by an amount substantially equal to the height of a modular unit, an additional module is placed in each open space, i.e., on each of the alternately spaced supporting structures not having an associated jacking means. Thereafter, each jacking means can be lowered, with the row of interconnected modules now supported on the supporting structures not having the associated jacking means through the intervening alternately spaced modules. Additional modular units can then be placed in the alternate spaces now provided atop each structural support having the jacking means. 1. A method of constructing a building comprising a plurality of modular units each enclosing at least a part of one or more rooms of the building, said modules in the completed building being stacked in side-by-side relationship to form a row of such modules comprising a single story of the building and with a succession of said rows being vertically stacked to provide a plurality of stories of the building and with each modular unit being generally in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped and all such modular units being substantially identical in exterior configuration, said method comprising the steps of: a. positioning on the building foundation a series of supporting structures one for each module in any row and with the spacing therebetween equal substantially to the overall horizontal width of any such module, alternate ones of said supporting structures having a jacking means for raising a load vertically by an amount at least equal to the height of one of said modules and the remaining alternate supporting structures being fixed, all said supporting structures being so positioned that at least the module supporting surfaces thereof underlie only the modules supported directly thereabove, b. placing a module on each of said supporting structures to form one of said rows, c. interconnecting the modules of the row to permit their being raised as an integral unit, d. simultaneously raising the interconnected modules of the row by the alternately positioned jacking means to a height sufficient to permit the insertion of a module above each fixed supporting structure, e. positioning a module on top of each of the fixed supporting structures, f. lowering said jacking means to transfer the load of all said raised interconnected modules to the modules positioned on said fixed supporting structures in step (e) and to provide clearance for the insertion of modules above each of said supporting structures having a jacking means, g. positioning a module on top of each supporting structure having a jacking means, h. interconnecting the row of modules which were positioned in steps (e) and (g); and i. repeating steps (d) through (h) for each additional story desired to be added to the building. 2. The method of claim 1 which further includes the step of positioning all of said supporting structures below grade level so that their module supporting surfaces are substantially at grade level to permit the positioning of said modules on said supporting structures to take place without requiring any substantial lifting of each module relative to grade level.
3. The method of claim 2 which further includes the step of removing said supporting structures having said jacking means after completion of the building.
4. The method of claim 3 which further includes the step of securing each jacking means to the module positioned thereon and when all modules of the building are properly positioned and structurally interconnected, contracting said jacking means relative to the associated supporting structure while said jacking means remains attached relative to the relative module to thereby raise the associated supporting structure to grade level and facilitate its removal.
5. The method of claim 1 and further including the step of adding substantially all materials required to be added to each story of the building before raising the modules of that story above ground level.

A method of constructing a building comprising a plurality of modular units each enclosing at least a part of one or more rooms of the building, said modules in the completed building being stacked in side-by-side relationship to form a row of such modules comprising a single story of the building and with a succession of said rows being vertically stacked to provide a plurality of stories of the building and with each modular unit being generally in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped and all such modular units being substantially identical in exterior configuration, said method comprising the steps of: a. positioning on the building foundation a series of supporting structures one for each module in any row and with the spacing therebetween equal substantially to the overall horizontal width of any such module, each of said supporting structures having a jacking means for raising a load vertically by an amount at least equal to the height of one of said modules, all said supporting structures being so positioned that at least the module supporting surfaces thereof underlie only the modules supported directly thereabove, b. placing a module on each of said supporting structures to form one of said rows, c. interconnecting the modules of the row to permit their being raised as an integral unit, d. raising the interconnected modules of the row by said jacking means, e. lowering alternately spaced ones of said jacking means to provide clearance above each for the insertion of a further module, f. positioning a module on top of each of the supporting structures having its associated jacking means lowered, g. lowering each of the remaining jacking means to provide clearance above each for the insertion of a further module, h. positioning a module on top of each supporting structure having its jacking means lowered in step (g), i. operatively interconnecting the row of modules which were positioned in steps (f) and (h), and j. repeating steps (d) through (i) for each additional story desired to be added to the building.
