CONSTITUTION: A display plate is formed by laminating transparent electrodes 2 and the electrochromic (EC) material 4 on a substrate 1 to form a display plate. The part of the electrodes 2 where the EC 4 is not laminated is masked by a film 3 consisting of an insulating material. On the other hand, the counter electrode is constituted of the transparent electrode 7 on a counter electrode substrate 8 and a counter electrode member 9. The metal phthalocyanine deriv. is used as the EC material 4 and the metal phthalocyanine deriv. which is previously maintained in the reduced state is used as the counter member 9. The metal phthalocyanine of the display electrode side restores the further stable neutral state o brown to blue and has no possibility of deterioration even if a color change is caused in the blue to brown reduction region by applying a negative charge to the metal phthalocyanine on the display electrode side. The deterioration of the counter electrode is, therefore, suppressed and the long life is obtd. even in case of driving the display device by impressing a negative voltage thereto.
