CONSTITUTION: The electrochromic element is so constituted as to satisfy {(R

An ITO electrode layer is formed over the entire surface of a device substrate 10 and is divided to two parts to form a drawing out part 7 for the upper electrode and the lower electrode layer 2. A reversible electrolytic oxidation layer 5, an ion conductive layer 4 and a reduction coloring type EC layer 3 are successively formed on the lower electrode 2. The resistivities and ion conductivities of the respective layers can be changed by selecting the conditions, such as the gas ratio, vacuum degree, film forming speed, substrate temp., and the power of the high frequency to be impressed, at the time of film formation. The coloration and decoloration uniform over the entire surface of the ECD surface and the formation of the device to larger sizes are possible in this way.
