The waste water is then transferred to a denitrifying cell 3 and agitated therein with the addition of hydrogen-donating matter 23 such as methanol, so that the nitric nitrogen is reduced into nitrogen under the catalytic action of denitrifying bacteria, removed and denitrified. Hence, a part of the nitrified liquid 12 is gathered in a denitrifying cell 4 for detection and agitated therein while adding the hydrogen-donating matter to it. The formed gas is analyzed, and the amount of nitric nitrogen in the nitrified liquid 12 is detected from the nitrogen content. The obtained value is inputted to a controlling circuit 39, a means 23 for supplying the hydrogen- donating matter is controlled by an output from said circuit 39, and the proper amount of the hydrogen-donating matter is added to the denitrifying cell 3.
