3 are each H or lower alkyl; X is halogen) is put to reductive reaction at 0-100°C for 0.5-10hr in an organic solvent (e.g. methanol, benzene) in the presence of 0.5-5 molar times, based on the compound of the formula I, of an alkali metal salt of lower fatty acid (e.g. sodium acetate) and a catalysts such as Zn, Co, Fe, Ni or Sn, thus obtaining the objective compound of formula II. The present compound has high sustainability and unique fragrance and flavor as a fragrance or flavoring component for a variety of foods and beverages, cosmetics, health, and hygienic goods, medicines etc. With this method, the present compound, which has been difficult to synthesize, can be obtained in a single step and also in high purity and yield.
