CONSTITUTION: Stirring and pulverizing members 2 are provided in a rotary drum 1 which constitutes a drier. Sludge is dried so that most of the sludge is changed into grains of 10mm or less in size and 20W40% in moisture content. A dried sludge reservoir 14 is provided at the halfway part of a passage for conducting the dried sludge to an incinerating and deodorizing furnace 17 by conveyors 10, 12, 12'. A sludge portion pulled out into the reservoir 14 is utilized as a fertilizer or the like. The other dried sludge portion is incinerated into ash in the furnace 17. The ash is picked out through an outlet port 35. Discharged drying gas is deodorized by the heat of the incineration to heat the coil 31 of a heat exchanger D. The discharged gas is then conducted to a dry and a wet dust collectors 33, 34 so that the gas is removed of dusts. The purified gas is heated by the coil 31 and released into the atmosphere so that no white smoke is produced.
