5 )] is oxidized with nitric acid in a concentration of 1W10wt% nitric acid in an equivalent amount of 0.5W10 times that of the compound of formula I in the presence of a sulfonic acid type anionic surfactant e.g. sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate, to give m-phenoxybenzaldehyde useful as a raw material for a pyrethroid insecticide in high yield under mild conditions with a slight content of undesirable by-products in an ordinary reactor. Preferably, the amount of the surfactant used is preferably 0.5W20wt% based on the compound of formula I, and the reaction temperature is 80W100°C.
