PURPOSE: To obtain a sulfate ester of polyvinyl alcohol having a high degree of esterification in high yield by sulfating PVA, removing the unreacted PVA, then treating the resultant product with an aqueous solution of an alkali and subsequently ultrafiltering the treated product. CONSTITUTION: PVA (preferably having 80-100% degree of saponification and 100-3000 degree of polymerization) is made to react with a sulfating agent (preferably pyridine salt of chlorosulfonic acid) and the unreacted PVA is then removed according to the filtration by suction using a glass filter. An aqueous solution of an alkali (preferably an aqueous solution of a strong alkali such as NaOH) is added to carry out the alkali treatment of the resultant PVA sulfate ester obtained as described above. The produced sulfate ester salt of the PVA is subsequently ultrafiltered and purified. Thereby, the objective compound is obtained. An ultrafiltration membrane having the resistance to the aqueous solution of the strong alkali such as a polyethersulfone-based membrane is preferably used for the ultrafiltration. The process has the advantage that it is more easily carried out than comparable prior art methods and that it gives copolymers containing a relatively high proportion of polymerized units of alkenol.
