A process for metathetic degradation of nitrile rubber is provided to reduce the amount of a catalyst, particularly a noble metal, and to realize increased catalytic activity and controlled reaction rate. A process for metathetic degradation of nitrile rubber is carried out by using a catalyst and phosphane or diphosphane, wherein phosphane or diphosphane is used in an amount of 0.01-1 equivalent per equivalent of the catalyst. Phosphane or diphosphane is used preferably in an amount of 0.05-0.5 equivalent, more preferably 0.10-0.20 equivalent, per equivalent of the catalyst. Phosphane includes a compound represented by the following formula IA, wherein radical R"s are the same or different, and each represents alkyl, alkenyl, alkadienyl, alkoxy, aryl, heteroaryl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, cycloalkadienyl, halogen or trimethylsilyl.
