221 Mattress structure having a foam mattress core US653416 1996-05-24 US5802646A 1998-09-08 James R. Stolpmann; Gary W. Ferdon; Roger D. Dalton
An elongated mattress core for a mattress structure includes a foam core having an upwardly-facing top surface, a bottom surface spaced apart from the top surface, and first and second elongated sides connecting the top and bottom surfaces. The foam core is formed to include a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart transverse slits extending downwardly from the top surface. Each slit terminates at a lower end spaced apart from the bottom surface by a first distance and extending transversely from a first slit end spaced apart from the first side of the foam core to a second slit end spaced apart from the second side of the foam core. Each adjacent pair of slits defines a foam column so that the foam core has a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart and transversely extending foam columns. Each foam column has a pair of generally vertical column side walls defining the slits. Each column side wall includes a shear coating having a low coefficient of friction so that each column can compress and decompress without drag forces resulting from frictional engagement with adjacent column side walls interfering with the compression and decompression.

A mattress has a corner at which two edges of the wall of the mattress meet. A handle has two end regions attached to the two edges respectively of the mattress wall adjacent the corner and has a medial portion that wraps around the corner. An elastic cord has two end regions attached to the two end regions respectively of the handle and has a medial portion that wraps around the corner of the mattress with the medial portion of the handle between the mattress and the medial portion of the cord. A gripper plate is attached to the plastic cord for securing a sheet or blanket to the mattress.

A handle apparatus constructed for use with a mattress of the type having a frame assembly including coil springs and rod-like members extending through the coil springs enclosed in a fabric cover, and handle receiving grommets positioned in the cover. The handle apparatus includes a strap-like hand grippable member extending along an outer surface of the cover, the grippable member having a pair of end portions positioned adjacent a pair of grommets in the cover, respectively. Each end portion has secured thereto an elongate connecting member adapted to extend through an adjacent grommet, each of the connecting members having a connecting end portion which extends adjacent the coil springs. The connecting end portion includes a longitudinally extending slot therein and an opening which leads into said slot. The slot is partitioned into a receiving portion and a locking portion by a flexible and resilient finger member which extends substantially transversely across the slot, thereby enabling the rod-like member to be inserted through the opening into the slot receiving portion and past the finger member into the slot locking portion. The finger member is operable to prevent the rod-like member from moving back to the slot receiving portion, thereby securely connecting the connecting member to the rod-like member. The rod-like member preferably extends through intermediate turns of adjacent coil springs so that the strain applied to the mattress by lifting the same by the handle apparatus will be transmitted mainly to the springs to prevent damage to the mattress cover.

Heavy cloth-like material is shaped as a rectangular parallelepiped and has sides or ends having a length corresponding to the length of a king-sized mattress and a bottom having a width corresponding to the thickness of a king-sized mattress. A pair of carrying straps of endless square 0 configuration are affixed to the bottom of the material and to the sides at corresponding opposite ends of the parallelepiped. The straps extend in loops from the opposite ends of the parallelepiped at angles with the bottom, whereby two people, each holding the extending part of a corresponding one of the straps, support and carry a mattress placed in the material and resting on the bottom thereof.

A mattress construction having peripheral frame members held spaced apart by resilient means, a top wall, a bottom wall, and opposite side and end walls connecting the top and bottom walls, a plurality of handles in which each includes spaced resilient anchor members. The anchor members are connected to and extend between the peripheral frame members and are formed to flex toward an opposite side wall to provide auxiliary support for the peripheral frame members. Spaced grommets are mounted in the side wall of the mattress adjacent each of the anchor members. A hand member has a grip portion rigidly connecting spaced leg portions, the leg portions extending through the grommets to the interior of the mattress and being connected to the anchor members whereby lifting forces on the handle members are transferred to the peripheral frame members.
