41 | SEATING WITH COMFORT SURFACE | PCT/US2004017777 | 2004-06-04 | WO2004107915B1 | 2005-06-02 | TUBERGEN RENARD G; PETERSON GORDON J; HEIDMANN KURT R |
A chair includes a base, a seat, a back, and a control operably supporting the seat and back on the base for movement between upright and recline positions. The seat and back include a stiff perimeter frame with opposing perimeter sections, and a plurality of rods each independently bendable in vertical and angled directions. End bearings on the rods are captured in pockets in the perimeter frame, which limits their inward and outward sliding movement. The control includes front and rear leaf springs and a pivot arm operably supporting the seat and the back for synchronous movement, with the direction of movement being such that energy is stored during recline. The energy stored during recline assists in providing a heavier person with added counterbalancing force during recline. A booster mechanism is also selectively engageable for added support upon recline.

The chair has a seat (1) and a seat mechanism (2), where the seat mechanism permits a sideways pivoting movement of the seat. The seat and the seat mechanism are formed such that one side of the seat is movable independently of the other side of the seat, during the sideways pivoting movement of the seat. The seat mechanism is formed so that the seat is mounted to be pivotable about a rotation axis lying parallel to a knee axis of a user. The seat has a seat surface (10) and a backrest (11), where the backrest and the seat surface are movable relative to one another.

A seating unit (20) includes a base (21), a seat (22), a back (23), and a control (24) operably supporting the seat and the back on the base for movement between upright and recline positions. The control includes a spring (137) providing a biasing supporting force to the back during recline, and further includes a booster mechanism (25) capable of increasing the supporting force, and still further includes a selector device (155) for activating and deactivating the booster mechanism. The selector device is easily moveable with a low effort that is separated from and independent from any friction generated by internal components of the booster mechanism. In a narrower aspect, the control is powered, such as by an electrical or electromechanical device from a remote location. A back stop is attached to the selector device, for movement between a disengaged position, a partial-recline position, and a recline-prevented position. |

In a seat back frame formed by attaching a spring unit (20) to a frame body (10), the spring unit (20) is easily attached to the frame without performing caulking. A projecting hooked portion (21) is formed in one side of the spring unit, and an insertion hole (13C) that receives the hooked portion (21) therein is provided in the frame. Thus, the hooked portion (21) is inserted into the insertion hole (13C) and hooked at a position on the rear surface thereof. |

A back support (1) is installed on a bed base (2) beneath a mattress (3). The support has a frame of steel tube (4) and a number of straps (5) extending between the side members (6, 7) of the frame. The straps extend laterally, that is crosswise, of bed and mattress for support of the back of a person lying in bed. The straps are adjustably attached to the frame by fittings (8).

A piece of furniture includes a rectangular frame for supporting a plurality of sinuous springs. A plurality of clip assemblies are secured to opposed side walls of frame. Each clip assembly comprises a metallic piece having a generally planar portion and tacks for insertion into the frame. The generally planar portion of the metallic piece is encased by plastic of a non-metallic piece having a hook to secure one end of a sinuous wire. Flexible connectors may be located in grooves of the clip assembly to collate multiple clip assemblies.

A seating unit includes a base, a reclineable back, a seat, and a control operably supporting the back and the seat on the base for synchronous movement between upright and recline positions. The control includes a pair of flexible support members and a link that combine to operably support the seat and back for synchronous movement on the base upon recline, which provides ergonomic non-shearing support for a seated user during recline. The back and seat each include perimeter frames, parallel resilient support members extending between side frame sections of the perimeter frames, and covers covering the resilient support members for distributed support and aesthetics. By this arrangement, the flexible member and the link move the one component along a defined path during recline of the back, and the seat and back also provide ergonomic support, both during recline and without recline.

The selector device is easily movable with a low effort that is independent from friction generated by internal components of the booster mechanism. The stop member is linearly slidably mounted atop a control housing for selectively engaging the booster mechanism and the link for movement between a disengaged position, a booster-engaged position, a partial-recline position, and a recline-prevented position.
60 | Comfort surface for seating | US10846784 | 2004-05-14 | US20040245841A1 | 2004-12-09 | Gordon J. Peterson; Kurt R. Heidmann; Renard G. Tubergen; Christopher J. Norman; Bruce M. Smith; Steven James Beukema |
A seating unit includes a perimeter frame, a flexible seating surface supported by the frame, and parallel elongated resilient force-distributing members coupled to the seating surface to control a contour of the seating surface when supporting a seated user. The resilient force-distributing members are bendable along their length and are sufficient in number and distribution to substantially reduce localized deflection of the seating surface and thereby reduce pressure point contact felt by the seated user. The resilient force-distributing members can be wire rods, long strips, or other resilient material with memory. The resilient force-distributing members can be supported on opposing sides of the perimeter frame in various ways to reduce inward pressure on the opposing sides during flexure of the resilient force-distributing members, such as by providing on ends of the resilient force-distributing members one or more rotatable pivots, sliding support at ends of the resilient force-distributing members, stretchable rubber supports, and/or elastic fabric. |
