124 Protective structure and bed frame with rigid canopy US998015 1992-12-29 US5241717A 1993-09-07 Jon P. Ward; Shirley J. Ward
The invention provides a protective structure which can be used to protect a localized area within home or work place. The invention is especially usable as a protective structure for a sleeping area or for a work table area. The invention includes a rectangular frame, vertical support members and a canopy. The structure is ideally made entirely out of steel or like material. The vertical support members include at each corner, a pair of linear members, such as tubular steel members. Each pair of linear members is in abutment at their upper ends but are spaced apart by several inches at their lower ends. Also, each pair of vertical members is tilted inwardly towards the center of the rectangular frame by about 7 degrees. By these techniques, the support structure is extremely rigid and is extremely resistant to lateral moments. The horizontal members which form the lower horizontal framework and the upper horizontal framework are easily detached and reattached so that the entire structure can be readily expanded or made smaller by simply changing out the several horizontal members for longer or shorter ones.

The various mid-pole structures are assembled together with the fastening members so as to have the top lid, the mid-pole structures, and the base frame assembled into a strong furniture to be used as a haven in case of earthquake.
126 Earthquake shelter with bed support and canopy US363592 1989-05-26 US4965895A 1990-10-30 Valentin N. Shustov
A manufacture for sheltering people in a case of earthquake emergency using an existing bed. The shelter is designed to protect people on the bed from collapsing structural and nonstructural elements of the building. The shelter has a horizontal frame of shelves for placing the bed on, confiners for fixing the bed, a cover on supports, and a base isolating system of ball-bearing footholds on pedestal plates with concave upper surfaces of proper curvature. Due to properly selected materials, shapes and cross-sections of its elements the shelter provides its own strength under the falling debris, and as a result secures people on the bed, while the base isolating system eliminates horizontal shaking of the shelter and thus prevents people on the bed from being thrown out of protective cover.
127 Earthquake protective bed US75970 1987-07-21 US4782541A 1988-11-08 David C. Tuchman
A protective bed suitable for protecting an occupant or occupants during major catastrophies resulting in falling debris includes a canopy made of steel mesh which is resistant to penetration by and accumulation of falling debris. The canopy covers the lower section of the bed. The canopy is supported by telescoping tubes with compression springs therein arranged to permit the canopy to remain in a noraml upper or raised position and to drop to a lower position with attendant compression of the spring to convert or absorb the energy of the falling debris, thereby minimizing damage to the bed structure and maximizing the degree of safety to the occupant or occupants of the bed. A padded guard rail extends about the periphery of the bed to prevent ejection of the occupant or occupants during violent movements of the bed, as might occur during an earthquake or tornado. Selected portions of the bed, including the canopy, the telescoping tubes, etc. can be covered with decorative materials, such as fabric, to render the functional protective structure asethetically pleasing.

131 Anti-earthquake bed EP10425224.2 2010-07-01 EP2272402A1 2011-01-12 Valori, Eugenio

THE SUBJECTS OF THIS INVENTION ARE BEDS TO BE USED AS PROTECTION TO DEFEND ONESELF AGAINST VARIOUS KINDS OF EARTHQUAKES. SUITABLE FOR ADULTS, CHILDREN, OLD AND SICK PEOPLE, THE BEDS ARE IDEAL WHERE THE SEISMIC PHENOMENON HAS ALREADY HAPPENED: MAINLY AS A PSYCHOLOGICAL HELP AS PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED TO GET BACK THEIR HOUSES AND WILL FEEL PROTECTED DURING THE NIGHT. THE BEDS ARE STRONG, SIMPLE, UNEXPENSIVE AND CAN PROTECT PEOPLE EVEN IN ALREADY CRACKED BUILDINGS. THE INVENTION DOESN'T INTEND TO REPLACE THE ANTI-EARTHQUAKE CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES: IT MEANS TO WORK IN SYNERGY WITH THEM TRYING TO SAVE SEVERAL HUMAN LIVES. AS FOR THE PRESENT STATE OF THE TECHNOLOGY, SOME BEDS COMPOSED OF VARIOUS METALS ALREADY EXIST, BUT THEY HAVEN'T THE SAME FEATURES AS THE PROPOSED STRUCTURE: THE LATTER IS ALWAYS READY TO BE USED WITHOUT ANY PARTICULAR DEVICES THANKS TO THE COMBINATION ROOF-ABSORBER POSTS - SAFETY SYSTEM WITH EIGHT LEANING POINTS THROUGH THE SECTION - BARS LEANING ON THE SIDE WALLS OF THE ROOF AND OF THE FLOOR.

140 Earthquake resistant bed US120956 1998-07-22 US6101769A 2000-08-15 James Patrick Hamill
A structure for housing a bed, for protection of a sleeper against serious injury or death from damage or collapse of the surrounding residence in an earthquake. The bed protection structure has two kinds of for this purpose: various structural integrity preservation, including means to both enhance the structural strength of the bed protection structure and to also allow the bed protection structure to respond to severe mechanical shocks resulting from impact of parts of the residence structure, while maintaining structural integrity of the bed protection structure; and anti-ballistic penetration, to resist ballistic penetration of residence structure debris fragments into the interior of the bed. The structural integrity preservation include an overall geometry of the form of a modified tetragonal anti-prism or MTAP; triangular spacing of structural members in the MTAP geometry; axially reinforced structural members; and vertical support members containing shock absorbing. The anti-ballistic penetration means include triangular solid panels of composite material. The overall bed protection structure achieves triangulation in all three planes for efficient distribution and resolution of forces, while also providing protection against ballistic penetration of the bed protection structure.
