An umbrella includes a panel attached to a crown and supported by ribs. A runner is coupled to the ribs by stretchers to be movable with respect to the crown. A pole located beside the panel is arranged upright with a slide mounted thereon to be movable along the pole. An arm has an end pivoted to the slide and is further supported by a link pivoted to both the pole and the arm. A first rope to which the slide is attached is movably received in the pole and supported by an upper pulley and a crank whereby by actuating the crank the first rope moves the slide along the pole. A second rope movably received in the arm having an end fixed to the pole via a pulley fixed on the slide and an opposite end extending beyond the arm and through the crown to be fixed to the runner whereby by moving the slide along the pole, the arm is rotated between a closed position and an open position where the runner is moved toward the crown by the second rope. Spaced tabs are formed on the arm to be received in grooves defined in the crown when the arm is moved to the open positioned for securely attaching the panel to the arm thereby allowing the panel to be moved with the arm for adjusting the orientation thereof. A locking device is provided in the arm for selectively securing the second rope.
62 Parasol US789763 1997-01-28 US5960806A 1999-10-05 Walter Steiner
In the case of the parasol or sunshade the bearing forces for holding the awning (1) are transferred laterally by means of an awning bar (3') constructed as a supporting arm, so that the said forces are transferred by means of its associated spreader bar (4') laterally to the central shaft of its spreading open device (5) and from the latter to the other awning bars (4). For this purpose, adjacent to the edge of the awning (1), the awning bar (3') is pivotably retained on a joint (10), which is provided on a holding device (9) displaceable on the parasol post or pole (6). The awning (1) is opened with the aid of a rope (12), which passes from a fixing point (13) below the holding device (9) to a spreading open device (5) located on the parasol top (2). By an upward sliding of the holding device (9) and simultaneous swinging out of the awning bar (3') away from the post (6), a tensile stress occurs on the rope (12) and as a result the awning (1) is opened. The inclination of the awning (1) can be simply and reliably adjusted by modifying the inclination of the supporting arm (7).

75 Extension arm for a free arm parasol, pivotably arranged on a carrier US10568936 2004-07-09 US07398790B2 2008-07-15 Gustav Adolf Glatz
The invention relates to an extension arm (6) that is arranged on a carrier (4) in such a way that it can pivot about the axis (18) thereof by means of a steering rod (20), and can be blocked in the pivoted position. Said steering rod (20) is arranged on a sleeve (44) that can be pivoted about the extension arm (6), can engage with the extension arm in different rotational angle positions, and can be directly or indirectly blocked on the carrier. According to the invention, a first coupling part (40) fixed to the extension arm (6) co-operates with a second coupling part (42) arranged on the sleeve (44) and acting in the axial direction. Furthermore, the steering rod (20) comprises a supporting element (56) that co-operates with a counterpart (58) arranged on the extension arm (6), in order to displace the second coupling part (42) in the axial direction by means of the steering rod (20). In this way, the extension arm can be pivoted and blocked in a simple manner with one hand.
76 ANTI-SLIP OPENING AND CLOSING DEVICE FOR SUN UMBRELLA US11306953 2006-01-17 US20070163632A1 2007-07-19 Wei-Chen Chang
An anti-slip opening and closing device for an umbrella is described, which comprises a rope reeled on a roller positioned on a pole of the umbrella. The roller is screwed with a reel having a friction disc. The friction disc is set inside a notch of a ratchet wheel. An elastic accessory is positioned between the roller and the ratchet wheel for pushing the friction disc to lean against the ratchet wheel. A block part is disposed to resist the ratchet wheel reversing. A bearing positioned at a side of the reel leans against beads of a cap positioned on the pole. When the reel is rotated clockwise, the roller and the reel are screwed together, and the rope is reeled by the roller. Hence, the umbrella is opened due to the pull of the rope, and the roller is not reversed by the obstruction of the block part. On the other hand, the reel is backed from the roller by rotating counterclockwise and leans against the beads. The friction between the friction disc and the ratchet wheel becomes minor if the reel keeps rotating. Then, the rope is released and the umbrella is folded gradually. If the reel stops rotating, the roller also stops rotating because of the friction produced between the friction disc and the ratchet wheel. Therefore, it is easy to operate the umbrella and to prevent the umbrella collapsing suddenly.
