An automatic envelope opener is described wherein a housing having an envelope infeed platform and envelope outfeed platform enables envelopes to be automatically opened. The envelopes are retained on edge in a generally vertical orientation on the platforms and moved one at a time from the infeed platform along a travel path, where a cutter is located, to the outfeed platform for stacking. The envelopes have a small edge segment severed by a cutter horizontally operative in the travel path and are automatically stacked against a movable retainer at the outfeed platform with a stacker and a diverter wall placed in the travel path to deflect envelopes towards the retainer. An envelope jogger is mounted on the housing to urge envelope contents to one edge and enable envelope opening without damage to the contents.

An apparatus is provided for processing mail by severing an edge of each envelope in a stack of mail. The apparatus includes an input bin for receiving a stack of mail. A feeder feeds the bottom envelope from the input bin to a transport that conveys the envelope along an envelope path. A cutter positioned along the envelope path severs one edge of the envelopes. A detector detects a characteristic of the envelope and a sorter sorts the envelope in response to the detected characteristic. |

An apparatus and method for opening an envelope for insertion of a collation. The apparatus includes a plurality of actuated suction cups that are positioned above an envelope in an insertion station. The actuated suction cups move downward to engage a top surface of the envelope and to lift the top surface away from the bottom surface in order to facilitate insertion of the collation. The suction cups include a first group that is actuated for opening all envelopes, and a second group, independently actuatable from the first group, and that is actuated only for opening envelopes having characteristics that require the additional suction cups. |

A conveyor system is provided including a conveyor and a plurality of functional trays that are removably attachable to the conveyor. Each tray includes a plate having first and second dimensions that are orthogonal to each other, and the plate includes a coupler configured to be removably attached to the conveyor with the second dimension of the plate being in parallel with a moving direction of the conveyor. The plurality of functional trays include one or more of an envelope-opening mechanism, an item-pushing mechanism, an envelope-closing mechanism, an item-wrapping mechanism, and a tray-height-adjustment mechanism. For example, the item-pushing mechanism includes a pusher slidably coupled to the plate, and a linear actuator configured to move the pusher relative to the plate along the first dimension so as to push an item off the functional tray. |

A method and apparatus for processing mail is provided. Mail is placed into an input been having a conveyor that conveys the mail towards a feeder. The feeder serially feeds the envelopes to a cutter that severs the top edge of the envelopes. A transport conveys the envelopes from the top cutter to an extractor. The extractor opens the edge-severed mail and presents the contents of the envelopes to an operator who manually extracts the contents. From the extractor, the operator manually feeds the extracted documents to a document input. From the document input, the documents are fed to a document transport that conveys the documents past an imaging module to obtain image data for the documents before sorting the documents to output bins. |

A mail handling safety system for allowing an individual to safely open mail and packages. The mail handling safety system includes a container having at least one side wall, an upper portion sealed upon the side wall and a lower opening within the container, a pair of apertures extending into the side wall sufficient in size to receive the arms of an individual, a pair of guides on opposing sides of the apertures, and a door member slidably positioned within the guides for selectively closing the apertures if a contaminated parcel is positioned within the container. The container is comprised of a transparent or semi-transparent material for allowing the user to view the interior of the container. The user places the parcels of mail upon an upper surface of a flat structure and then inserts their hands through the apertures. The user then opens the parcels of mail and if a parcel contains a suspected biological or chemical contaminant, the user then removes their arms and closes the door members about the apertures until the appropriate personnel may arrive to inspect the parcel. |

A glove box assembly is used for contamination-proof mail handling. Items of mail, after they are placed into the glove box cavity and the cavity is sealed, are opened and simultaneously examined for any suspiciously hazardous materials. Harmful exposure to chemicals and biological cultures can be substantially reduced if mail items, such as envelopes and small packages are opened in the mail handling cavity while it is hermetically sealed. The glove box assembly has a see-through lid which allows completely open inspection of all mail items as they are being opened. The cavity may be lighted and any type of mail processing device may be placed at ready inside the cavity. |
