An apparatus for forming the side seamed bags includes an extruder, a tubing flattener, a perforator, a sealer, a corona treater, a printer and a slitter. The treated, printed bags may be stored on rolls for later slitting into two bag streams and folding into thirds.

The method and apparatus for making the film (55) includes supplying a continuous web of bag making material, feeding from a coil of continuous fastener material enough fastener material to make a single fastener, (26) positioning, cutting, and attaching the fastener (26) to the film (55), with a plurality of fasteners (26) attached thereon.

A container strip in the form of a chain of interconnected preopened bags with openings having longitudinal dimensions of at least about 1/32 inch is disclosed. The container strip provides greatly enhanced facility for bag registration and opening during packaging operations utilizing the improved container strip. A process of forming a chain of pre-opened bags is also disclosed. Face and back plastic webs are independently fed along individual paths of travel to a common path. The webs are differentially tensioned while in their independent paths by stretching the face web more than the back web such that the face web will retract longitudinally more than the back web upon release of the web tension. While so tensioned edge seals are formed between the webs to convert the webs into a tube and longitudinally spaced transverse seals are formed between the webs to delineate bottoms of bags. Transverse lines of weakness are formed in said back web to facilitate separation of bags from the remainder of the web during a subsequent use. Tension in individual bag sections of the face web is released by forming longitudinally spaced transverse separations of the sections and thereby producing a space between each contiguous pair of sections.

A method for manufacturing a web of interconnected bags from a semitubular web of material, in which pockets are formed at a first side of the web and a second side of the web adjacent a first of two longitudinal outer edges of the web. The web is welded together along transverse lines substantially perpendicular to the pockets for producing one bag at a time, which is conveyed transversely substantially perpendicular to the direction motion of the web. The pockets project at one of the two sides of the web beyond the pockets on the other side of the web substantially perpendicular to the direction of motion of the web. Each bag is welded and conveyed substantially perpendicular to the direction of motion of the web.

A transverse-welding station [(12)] is provided for joining the hose parts [(11a, 11b)] of foil hoses [(11)] that are welded to bag lengths [(BL)] by transverse welds [(21, 22)]. In this station, the hose parts are superimposed such that the joining weld is laid exactly on the superimposed transverse welds [(22) ] of the two hose parts. This results in a joining of the hose ends that does not use adhesive tape and observes the pitch determined by the length of the bags. The invention provides a joining that is practically imperceptible and does not at all impair the quality of the bags made. In particular, the occurrence of single bags that would have to be considered as waste is avoided. The method is applicable for cutting out imperfections from a foil hose, as well as for connecting the beginning of one hose roll to the end of the preceding hose roll.

A roll film (1) rolled around a winding core (2), having resin made fastener claws (3) and (4) of an engagement tool along with both edges of the film. The claws are melt-bonded to the film. The film (1) is wound in a serpentine manner relative to the winding core (2). This roll film may be incorporated into an automatic bag producing and filling machine without any intricate operation. When the roll film is paid off, it is possible to smoothly supply the film at a constant speed and to form a fastener claw provided bag with a high efficiency.

A plurality of expandable bags are serially connected lengthwise in roll form. Each bag is of substantially long length and has an expandable gusset near one end thereof and traversely of the length. The gusset end of each bag is respectively connected to the filling or open end of the next bag by perforated or weakened structure. Various modifications of the position of the opening are incorporated. Also, the bags are rolled into serial form in a compact package for distribution and use with the gusset and opening portions of each bag being rolled inwardly to the inside of the roll, or outwardly to the outside of the roll. The method of making these serially connected bags in roll form is also included.
